Next-Gen Fury: The 2026 Jeep Cherokee's Shocking Cost & Hybrid Power Revealed!

The return of the Jeep Cherokee after a three-year absence from the white-hot compact crossover SUV segment is a significant event, prompting comparisons to historical strategic missteps likeHenry Ford's Model T replacement in 1927. Launched as an all-new 2026 model, the Cherokee aims to re-establish its presence, potentially benefiting from a shifting automotive landscape towards electrification that could make its belated entry better positioned for success than an earlier model might have been.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee makes a stark departure from its predecessor in design, embracing a "Hip 2B Square" aesthetic. Design leader Vince Galanteleaned into childhood memories of the original XJ-generation Jeep Cherokee, the model that pioneered the now dominant unibody SUV segment. The new KM Cherokee borrows as much boxiness from that Dick Teague-designed original as aerodynamic constraints allow. Features include a squared-off seven-slot grille flanked by U-shaped daytime running lights, reminiscent of the original's rectangular sealed-beams.
Standard 18-inch and optional 20-inch wheels are housed in XJ-ish trapezoidal arches, and the taillamps wrap around the corners with a horizontal orientation, evoking Jeep's jerrycan look. The boxy, upright D-pillar, embellished with a Germanic Hofmeister kink, directly addresses a key complaint with the outgoing KL Cherokee: insufficient cargo room, which has now grown by 25 percent.

Moving from Fiat-Chrysler’s Compact-Wide platform to Stellantis' STLA Large architecture, the new Cherokee experiences a substantial growth spurt. It stretches 6.1 inches in overall length with a 6.5-inch longer wheelbase (5.9 inches relative to the previous-generation Trailhawk), making it either the biggest compact or smallest midsize SUV on the market, still aligning with compacts like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Width increases by 1.5 inches, while height drops 0.3 to 0.5 inch.
These dimensional changes translate to improved interior space and class competitiveness, with nearly every interior dimension wiggling upward. Upper trim levels, like the Overland, showcase elevated material quality, including fancy perforated seat inserts and an "Arctic" interior color scheme option available on the top three trims.
For its launch, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be offered exclusively with a new hybrid powertrain. This system combines a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a two-motor planetary combiner hybrid system, drawing power from a 1.1-kWh lithium-ion (NCM) battery strategically placed under the rear passenger compartment. Stellantis' use of this technology, originally patented by Toyota and later made royalty-free through the end of 2030, highlights a strategic move for the brand. The engine alone produces 177 hp at 5,500 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. The net total output for the hybrid system is 210 hp and 230 lb-ft, managed by a continuously variable automatic transmission. This output subdivides the old Cherokee’s 2.4-liter naturally aspirated and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine options.
The new Cherokee significantly outperforms its predecessors in fuel efficiency, with estimated EPA city/highway/combined ratings of 42/33/37 mpg. This is a substantial improvement over the old model's 20-21/26-29/22-24 mpg. Its 13.7-gallon tank provides an impressive estimated combined range of 507 miles, vastly exceeding the previous 15.8-gallon tank’s 348–379 miles. Jeep estimates average American commuters could spend less than $100 per month on gas. Despite the focus on efficiency, the Cherokee maintains a respectable 3,500-pound tow capacity, only 500 pounds shy of the previous 2.0L turbo's capability.
All-wheel drive is standard on the Cherokee, featuring Active Drive 1, which uses a power takeoff from the transverse hybrid powertrain to drive the rear axle on demand. This system disconnects when not needed to reduce friction and save fuel, automatically re-engaging whenever conditions require greater traction. Instead of a center differential, clutch slippage prevents front-rear binding in tighter turns. While a more focused Trailhawk off-road version with locking differentials is not available at launch, it is anticipated to arrive later and earn a Trail Rated badge.
Active Drive 1 offers modes for Auto, Sand, Snow, and Mud, with front-rear torque split varying from 100/0 to 50/50. The minimum ground clearance is 8.0 inches, slightly less than the outgoing Cherokee’s 8.3–8.7 inches, but contributing to better fuel economy. Its 19.6-degree approach angle compares favorably with competitive offerings, while the 29.4-degree departure angle ranks best in class, falling just shy of the previous Cherokee Trailhawk's 32.2 degrees. The 18.8-degree breakover angle also contributes to its real SUV capabilities.

The 2026 Jeep Cherokee will debut with a premium pricing strategy. The base model, launching in early 2026, starts at $36,995, while the Laredo, Limited, and top-tier Overland trims are priced at $39,995, $42,495, and $45,995, respectively. The Limited and Overland trims will be available first, in late 2025. This pricing places the Cherokee at a higher point compared to many compact hybrid SUV competitors, such as the 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (nearly $3,000 cheaper base-for-base), Kia Sportage Hybrid (the Sportage S is $2,960 cheaper), and certain trims of the Honda CR-V Hybrid (though some CR-V trims are more expensive).
Jeep's strategy appears to bank on pent-up demand and its mechanical AWD offering improved off-road and all-weather performance to justify the premium, acknowledging that its residual values currently don't match market leaders like Honda or Toyota. The hybrid-only launch contributes to this higher entry price point, distinguishing it from competitors that often offer cheaper non-hybrid options. The 2026 Jeep Cherokee weighs approximately 4,300 lbs and has exterior dimensions of 188.1 inches (L) x 74.7 inches (W) x 67.5 inches (H), with a wheelbase of 113.0 inches. It is estimated to achieve 0-60 MPH in 8.0 seconds.
