Netflix’s One Piece Continues Its Winning Run With Third Season Ahead

Netflix’s live-action adaptations of animated and anime properties have produced mixed results, but its take on Eiichiro Oda’s acclaimed manga One Piece has emerged as a notable success.

The series follows Monkey D. Luffy, played by Iñaki Godoy, and his eccentric Straw Hat Pirates as they journey across dangerous seas in search of the legendary One Piece treasure. Its willingness to embrace the source material’s absurdity, from Devil Fruit powers and monstrous creatures to extravagant costumes and theatrical sets, has helped give the adaptation a distinctive identity despite occasional visual effects shortcomings.

Season 2 takes Luffy and his crew deeper into the Grand Line, introducing new islands, dangerous criminals and eccentric characters while allowing the central cast to develop their performances.

Godoy remains the emotional centre as Luffy, while Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero Gibson and Taz Skylar continue to strengthen their portrayals of Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji, with newcomers including Charithra Chandran’s Miss Wednesday, David Dastmalchian’s Mr. 3 and Tony Tony Chopper, voiced by Mikaela Hoover.

Eiichiro Oda’s involvement has also helped the adaptation preserve the characters and themes of the manga while allowing filmmakers to make changes necessary for live action.

The series’ popularity has been reflected in its viewership and reviews, with Season 2 reportedly attracting 16.8 million viewers and 136.2 million hours watched globally during its first four days, while Season 1 also returned to Netflix’s weekly English-language chart. Season 2 received a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 30 reviews, alongside a 95% audience score, compared with Season 1’s 86% critics’ score and 95% audience score.

With a third season already in development, One Piece has established itself as one of Netflix’s more successful live-action adaptations, even as questions remain over how effectively the platform can translate increasingly expansive manga storylines to television.
