Music Industry Shockwave: Burna Boy Blacklisted by Nigerian DJs Amid Altercation

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Damini "Burna Boy" Ogulu has been embroiled in a physical altercation with disc jockey Michael "DJ Tunez" Adeyinka, prompting swift action from the Nigerian DJ Association (NDJ). The incident reportedly occurred on a Monday evening at a popular weekly Afrobeats gathering in Lagos, where both artists were present. What began as a heated exchange between the "Last Last" crooner and DJ Tunez escalated into a physical confrontation.

While the precise catalyst for the dispute remains undisclosed, reports indicate that the situation intensified, with members of Burna Boy's entourage allegedly becoming involved before onlookers intervened to de-escalate tensions and restore order. The altercation has since become a focal point of widespread discussions across various social media platforms, drawing significant public attention.

In response to the incident, the NDJ issued a statement on its Facebook page on Tuesday night, announcing a temporary ban on Burna Boy's music from their members' playlists. The association unequivocally condemned the act, describing it as an "act of hostility and division within the industry." The NDJ urged all industry stakeholders to actively promote unity, foster mutual respect, and uphold professionalism throughout the entertainment landscape.

The statement from the NDJ partly read, "To please ensure freedom and equality for all the DJs nationwide, so that they can flourish. We cannot all succeed when half of us are being held back. The Nigerian DJ is strongly opposed to discrimination against any of its NDJs. Burna Boy's music is temporarily unavailable on any of our DJs' playlists till further notice." The association further indicated that its team would conduct a thorough investigation into the incident involving DJ Tunez, urging DJs across Nigeria to maintain vigilance and respect towards all artists at their events, emphasizing that "Respect the DJs. DJs to DJs is highly effective. Please note that all DJs are equal."

Beyond the immediate disciplinary action, the NDJ also used the opportunity to advocate for broader principles within the DJ community, calling upon all disc jockeys to embrace tolerance and reject any form of discrimination based on caste, creed, sect, religion, or gender. The association stressed the importance of treating everyone within Nigeria's DJ community with equal respect, reiterating the principle that no DJ holds a superior position over another. "Such are the places where every male and female NDJ seeks equal justice, equal opportunity and equal dignity without discrimination. Irrespective of where it's coming from, be it from a fellow NDJ or NON NDJ," the association affirmed.

The NDJ concluded its message with a reflective stance on human behavior, stressing that hatred is not an inherent trait but rather something people learn over time, whether based on skin color, religion, background, or gender. The association highlighted that just as such attitudes are learned, they can also be unlearned. It added that love, in contrast, comes more naturally to the human heart than hate and can be nurtured through enhanced understanding and empathy. Meanwhile, a video purportedly showing Burna Boy mocking DJ Tunez began circulating on Wednesday morning, with some social media users challenging the singer to confront the DJ one-on-one, implying his entourage played a decisive role in the altercation.
