Middle East on Edge As Iran War Disrupts Travel And Threatens Safety Of Civilians
A sudden escalation of conflict in the Middle East, specifically between the United States and Israel against Iran, has led to widespread turmoil, grounding thousands of flights and stranding countless travelers.
The conflict, which began on a Saturday in late February, saw drone and missile attacks spill into various Middle Eastern countries, including the United Arab Emirates, targeting US military bases.
In view of the ongoing situation, an air of relief permeated Manchester Airport's arrivals gate as a small number of flights from Dubai, among other Middle Eastern cities, finally resumed.
Brian McLeod, a Glaswegian traveler, was among those grateful to be on UK soil after escaping Dubai.
He recounted the surreal experience of taking shelter in a basement at midnight and the multiple cancellations of his flight to Glasgow before Emirates managed to secure his family a spot on a Manchester-bound plane.
Similarly, London-based businessman Dominic Wilson was on the runway in Dubai when the airport was suddenly locked down, his flight halted.
Initially annoyed by the inconvenience, the reality of the bombings that had commenced that morning soon became stark.
The human toll and anxiety were palpable, another individual, debra anxiously awaited her husband, who had been working in the Middle East when the bombs began to fall, worried sick while trying to maintain contact.
A group of pilgrims, who had been visiting the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem when fighting erupted, described seeing bombs in the sky and having to split up, with some driving all the way to Egypt to find a flight home.
