Meta's New AI Image Generator Sparks Privacy Fury Over Photo Use

Meta has officially launched Muse Image, a new AI image generator developed by its dedicated AI unit, Meta Superintelligence Labs. Internally codenamed 'Mango', this feature is now freely accessible via the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp. While offering capabilities similar to other AI image generators, such as creating whimsical, cartoonish images and providing prefabricated 'presets' to inspire users, Muse Image has already ignited significant controversy due to one particular feature.

The most contentious aspect of Muse Image allows users to manipulate images from another Instagram user's public profile using AI. By simply tagging the individual, their public pictures can be co-opted to create new AI-generated images. This functionality has been labeled a 'privacy landmine' by critics, especially given Meta's policy stating that 'people may be able to create content with your Instagram content using AI features at Meta' and that users 'will not be notified about content created using AI features at Meta.' Although Meta asserts that users 'have control' through opt-out settings, the default activation of this feature mirrors past practices that have drawn scrutiny from users and regulators.

Beyond the privacy concerns, Muse Image boasts several less invasive and practical applications. It enables the creation of custom advertisements, leveraging AI's growing presence in the advertising sector. Users can also experiment with interior decorating ideas, such as visualizing how a secondhand couch might look in their space, with this function designed to integrate with Facebook Marketplace. Furthermore, Muse offers prompt-based image editing, allowing users to perform tasks like placing themselves in front of historical landmarks, cleanly removing unwanted elements from photos, or generating functional QR codes, all for sharing across Meta's various platforms.

Alongside Muse Image, Meta is rolling out a suite of new AI effects for Instagram Stories, powered by the same Muse platform. These include customizable filters capable of modifying existing photographs. While the company states that the use of the new AI model is free for 'everyday creation,' a subscription plan will be required once users surpass a certain usage limit. Meta has also confirmed that Muse Video, an AI video generator, is currently under development.

This launch comes amidst Meta's broader push into AI, which has seen the release of other AI-powered tools like the Creator assistant and the Pocket app for 'vibe-coding' video games. Despite accusations of a 'nebulous AI strategy,' Meta continues to invest heavily in AI infrastructure. However, the company's historical privacy record contributes to user unease regarding Muse. Past incidents, such as the 2019 $5 billion FTC fine related to the Cambridge Analytica data misuse and the 2021 shutdown of Facebook's facial-recognition system due to biometric data concerns, highlight a recurring pattern of broad data usage unless users actively opt out, a pattern that Muse's photo-tagging feature regrettably perpetuates.
