Manchester United can sign striker for free after Roy Keane's nemesis makes transfer decision

Published 4 days ago2 minute read

Manchester United's search for a new striker remains ongoing with a host of candidates being mentioned as potential targets.

United have already made one new signing so far this summer with the addition of Matheus Cunha to Ruben Amorim's squad. United are also looking to complete a deal for Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, but have had two bids rejected for the Cameroon international.

There have also been persistent rumours that United want to sign a new striker this summer, despite having Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund in their squad. Liam Delap was a player of interest to United earlier in the summer before the centre forward went on to join Chelsea instead.

Reports have now emerged claiming that former Leicester City star Jamie Vardy is a target for United. Vardy is now a free agent after his contract expired at the King Power Stadium at the end of last month, meaning United would be able to sign the striker for free.

However, recent reports have also claimed that Serie A outfit Genoa are also interested in signing Vardy on a free transfer this summer. But it has been claimed by La Repubblica that the Italian club's manager, Patrick Vieira, said 'no' to the transfer.

Vieira has been the manager of Genoa since last November, following his time in charge of Crystal Palace and later having a spell at Strasbourg. During his playing days, the former Arsenal midfielder often went head-to-head with United legend Roy Keane in the middle of the park.

If the report from Italy turns out to be true, it could mean that Vieira has now given United the chance to sign Vardy to solve their striker transfer dilemma. Whether United actually turn out to have a genuine interest in signing Vardy, though, remains to be seen.
