London Film Festival Crowns Lucrecia Martel's 'Landmarks' As Best Film!

The recent London Film Festival concluded with several acclaimed films receiving top honors across various categories, highlighting diverse narratives and cinematic achievements. Lucrecia Martel’s compelling documentary “Landmarks,” also known as “Nuestra Tierra,” was distinguished as the best film in the official competition. This powerful work delves into the profound impact of colonialism in Latin America and specifically investigates the 2009 murder of Indigenous leader Javier Chocobar in Argentina’s Tucumán Province.
The competition jury, led by president Elizabeth Karlsen, lauded Martel’s documentary for its deep empathy and exceptional journalistic and cinematic rigor. They noted how Martel brings forward contemporary voices and previously overlooked histories, crafting a poignant portrait of an Indigenous community that, through the film, gains a measure of the justice that courts have long withheld. The jury expressed their pride in honoring this singular achievement amidst a remarkably strong field of contenders.
Beyond the main competition, other significant awards were presented. Vincho Nchogu’s “One Woman One Bra,” a humorous exploration of a woman’s struggle to protect her ancestral land, earned the Sutherland Award for best first feature. In the documentary competition, David Bingong’s “The Travelers” was recognized as the winner. This film offers an intimate and hopeful perspective on the perilous journey undertaken by a group of migrants traveling from Cameroon to Europe. The short film competition saw Said Zagha’s “Coyotes” take the top prize, depicting a Palestinian doctor’s ordeal after her commute home is interrupted by Israeli soldiers.
The London Film Festival officially drew to a close with the U.K. premiere of Julia Jackman’s fantasy fairytale “100 Nights of Hero.” Audience participation continued through Monday with voting for the LFF Audience Awards, with the winners for best feature film and British feature film anticipated to be announced shortly.
