Sopé Dìrísù Shines with Gotham Award for 'My Father’s Shadow'

Actor Sopé Dìrísù is celebrating a significant achievement, having won the award for Outstanding Lead Performance at the Gotham Awards for his role in the film “My Father’s Shadow.” Dìrísù expressed his profound appreciation following the announcement, extending his gratitude to The Gotham Awards, all who voted, and acknowledging the importance of the moment alongside the film’s director, Akinola Davies Jr.
In his statement, Dìrísù shared, “It truly is an amazing feeling to know that My Father’s Shadow is a deeply personal project that resonates across seas and cultures and has found a loving audience in New York and America.” He further added his eagerness to share the film with a wider audience upon its release next year, indicating the project's global appeal and emotional depth.
“My Father’s Shadow” is a compelling narrative set against the backdrop of a pivotal historical moment: June 23, 1993, the day Nigeria’s June 12 election was annulled. The film intricately follows the journey of two brothers navigating the city of Lagos with their estranged father. Through this premise, the movie delves into profound themes of family dynamics, identity, and the significant weight of a political turning point in a nation’s history.
The genesis of “My Father’s Shadow” began as a short story penned by producer Wale Davies, which subsequently evolved into the full-length feature film under the direction of Akinola Davies Jr. Akinola’s directorial prowess also received notable recognition on the same night at the Gotham Awards, where he was honored with the Best Breakthrough Director award. This adds to his earlier accolade of Best Director received at the 28th British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) for the very same film, marking two remarkable wins connected to this single project.
With such prestigious recognition for both its lead actor and director, “My Father’s Shadow” is garnering significant attention and is highly anticipated as one of the standout films to watch in the coming year, underscoring its critical acclaim and potential impact.
