Marvel Shakes Up Spider-Verse with Nicolas Cage's Groundbreaking New Series!

A groundbreaking live-action Spider-Man series, titled 'Spider-Noir,' is in development, set to feature Nicolas Cage as its leading man, a concept that would have been unimaginable a decade ago. This production follows the immense success of the 'Spider-Verse' franchise and the enduring global interest in Marvel's iconic webslinger. What makes this adaptation particularly unique is that Cage's Spider-Man, referred to as The Spider or Spider-Noir, will not be the traditional Peter Parker, but rather a character named Ben Reilly, operating within a distinctive 20th-century noir aesthetic.
Spider-Man Noir first emerged in 2009 through the comic series 'Spider-Man: Noir,' which reimagined the classic Spidey mythology as a Depression-era narrative filled with mystery and intrigue. This alternate universe Peter Parker was famously voiced by Nicolas Cage in the animated hit 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.' Its popularity has since propelled Spider-Noir into live-action, marking it as the first alternate universe Spider-Man to achieve this. The Prime Video series, however, has opted to change the character's civilian identity from Peter Parker to Ben Reilly, likely to circumvent issues related to Sony's live-action rights and avoid confusion with the ongoing Tom Holland-led 'Spider-Man' film franchise.
For those unfamiliar, Ben Reilly holds a significant, albeit complex, place in Marvel Comics history. He was initially introduced in 1975 in 'The Amazing Spider-Man #149' as a clone of Peter Parker, created by the villain Jackal. After a confrontation, one of the Spider-Men seemingly died, leaving the remaining one to question his own identity. Recognizing his cloned status, he adopted the name Ben Reilly in homage to Peter's Uncle Ben and Aunt May (Reilly being May's maiden name). He remained largely absent from continuity for decades until his dramatic return in the 1990s during the infamous 'The Clone Saga,' a storyline that provocatively suggested Reilly might be the original Spider-Man.
During 'The Clone Saga,' Ben Reilly primarily operated as the Scarlet Spider while Peter Parker remained Spider-Man. However, for a period, Reilly took over the main Spider-Man identity, even headlining titles such as 'The Amazing Spider-Man' and 'The Sensational Spider-Man,' allowing Peter and Mary Jane Watson-Parker to pursue a normal life. Reilly was eventually killed in battle with the Green Goblin in 'Spider-Man #75' in 1996. Despite many fans disliking 'The Clone Saga,' Reilly garnered a loyal following, leading to hopes for his return. While he did eventually reappear, it was initially as a villain, adopting the Jackal identity. This transformation was temporary, and Ben Reilly ultimately returned to his Scarlet Spider persona, once again becoming a hero, despite enduring numerous deaths and profound psychological trauma throughout his comic book existence.
The decision for 'Spider-Noir' to feature Ben Reilly, combining his tortured comic book history with the already grim and intriguing Spider-Man Noir interpretation, presents a fascinating and exciting departure for fans eager to see diverse interpretations of the wall-crawler on screen. By integrating Reilly's unique backstory with the Depression-era excitement of Spider-Man Noir, Prime Video aims to create a series that truly distinguishes itself from other Spider-Man productions. This series will be the fourth live-action television adaptation to feature the wall-crawler, and notably, only the second to focus on a Spider-Man not explicitly named Peter Parker.
The creative direction for 'Spider-Noir,' with Nicolas Cage at the helm of this 'The Big Sleep'-inspired detective drama, promises a unique viewing experience. As 'Into the Spider-Verse' demonstrated, there is a vast array of Spider-Man narratives beyond the typical blockbuster fare. 'Spider-Noir' is set to capitalize on this, offering a fresh take on the character that is expected to captivate audiences. The series is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on May 27, 2026.
