Living Legend Honored: Ms. Lauryn Hill to Receive Icon Award at 2026 BET Awards!

Ms. Lauryn Hill is slated to be honored with the prestigious Living Legend Icon Award at the 2026 BET Awards. This significant event is scheduled to broadcast live on Sunday, June 28, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, originating from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be hosted by Druski. According to BET, the Living Legend Icon Award is designed to “honor the pioneers who mastered their craft and never let go of the culture.”

Connie Orlando, Executive Vice President of specials, music programming, and music strategy for BET, expressed the profound significance of this recognition in a statement. Orlando affirmed that “Ms. Lauryn Hill is the very definition of a living legend,” emphasizing that Hill has consistently shaped moments rather than chasing them throughout her illustrious career. Her artistry is credited with redefining the possibilities within music and empowering a generation to embrace fearlessness, spirituality, and freedom. Orlando concluded by highlighting Hill's pervasive influence, which is deeply woven into the cultural fabric, making it a profound honor to celebrate her legacy on what BET refers to as “Culture’s Biggest Night.”

Hill, who is 51, first achieved widespread acclaim as a pivotal member of the iconic group The Fugees. Their landmark 1996 album, *The Score*, notably ascended to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, holding the No. 1 position for four consecutive weeks. Following this success, Hill launched her solo career with the release of her debut album, *The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill*, in 1998. This intimate and genre-defying masterpiece garnered near-unanimous critical acclaim. The album mirrored her group's prior success by also topping the Billboard 200 for four weeks and produced a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Doo Wop (That Thing).”

*The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill* made history by becoming the first hip-hop album to win the coveted Grammy for Album of the Year. Its triumph further established Hill as the first woman to achieve the remarkable feat of winning five Grammy Awards in a single night. The album’s enduring legacy has been further cemented through its induction into the National Recording Registry in 2014 and the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2024. Hill also made a recent return to the Grammy stage earlier this year, delivering a memorable performance as part of an extended In Memoriam tribute to the legendary artists Roberta Flack and D’Angelo.

The Living Legend Icon Award is a newly established honor. Historically, BET introduced the Ultimate Icon Award in 2015, with Janet Jackson serving as its inaugural recipient. In the most recent year, a departure from tradition saw four distinguished artists—Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, Snoop Dogg, and Kirk Franklin—jointly receive the Ultimate Icon Award, underscoring the evolution of BET's recognition of cultural pioneers.
