Kratos Recast Drama Rocks 'God of War' Series After Star's On-Set Injury!
Prime Video's "God of War" series will recast its lead role of Kratos after star Ryan Hurst suffered an injury on set, delaying production. The show, which adapts the Norse mythology arc of the game, will feature Callum Vinson as Atreus alongside a new Kratos, with filming expected to resume by mid-fall.
Prime Video's highly anticipated live-action adaptation of the popular PlayStation video game, "God of War," is undergoing a significant change, with the lead role of Kratos being recast. This decision comes after star Ryan Hurst sustained an injury on set in June, halting production and necessitating a new actor for the titular god of war.
Ryan Hurst, who previously lent his voice to the Norse god Thor in the video game "God of War: Ragnarok," was initially cast as Kratos, and Prime Video had even released a first-look photo of him in the role in February, signaling that cameras were officially rolling. However, Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt, an injury that could take up to a year to fully recover from. Rather than delay production, Amazon decided to recast the role, meaning that four full episodes already shot with Hurst will now have to be redone once a new actor steps in. Prime Video hopes to resume production by mid-fall after the new Kratos is cast.
The series, which has received a two-season order at Amazon, will focus on the Norse chapter of Kratos' saga, directly adapting the events of the 2018 "God of War" game. The official character description reveals Kratos as a Spartan by birth and a god by nature, who once made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War, leading to the loss of his soul. The plot will center on Kratos and his ten-year-old son, Atreus, as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Throughout their adventures, Kratos endeavors to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus, in turn, attempts to teach his father how to be a better human, all while battling the gods of the Norse pantheon.
The cast for the series includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, who will star opposite the new Kratos. Ed Skrein is set to play Baldur, the primary antagonist in Season 1, who is the son of Odin and brother of Thor. Other confirmed cast members include Mandy Patinkin as the All-Father, Odin; Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, the God of Thunder; Max Parker as Heimdall; Alastair Duncan as Mimir; Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri; Teresa Palmer as Sif; and Sonya Walger as Freya.
Ronald D. Moore serves as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for "God of War" under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes. Executive producers also include Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis are co-executive producers. The series is a co-production between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.
