“Jenifa Goes Global”: Funke Akindele Named Among Hollywood Reporter’s Most Influential Women in International Film

What do you call it when Jenifa, the street-smart queen of Ayetoro, becomes a global film force? History.
Award-winning Nigerian actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has earned a spot on The Hollywood Reporter’s prestigious list of the Most Influential Women in International Film. The list, which celebrates 46 powerhouse women across the globe who are shaping the future of cinema, is a momentous nod to Akindele’s impact, not just in Nollywood but across the international stage.
Reacting to the news, Funke shared a heartfelt message on her TikTok page:
“I’m deeply honoured and truly grateful to be featured in The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘The Most Influential Women in International Film.’
To be recognized among 46 powerful, visionary women from around the world is more than a moment of celebration—it’s a call to keep building, creating boldly, and lifting others as we rise.”
She didn’t stop there. In a show of sisterhood and admiration, she gave a special shout-out to another Nigerian legend also featured on the list:
“A heartfelt congratulations to Aunty MO @moabudu, who has also been featured in this great piece.
Thank you so much, Ma, for your invaluable contribution to the creative industry. It’s an honor to be featured alongside someone who has been such a powerful source of inspiration.”
This is the same Funke who once made us laugh until we cried in Jenifa. The same woman who evolved into a record-smashing producer. From Omo Ghetto: The Saga to Battle on Buka Street, and then the unforgettable A Tribe Called Judah—the highest-grossing Nigerian movie ever, with over 1.2 billion naira in the bank.
But let’s not get it twisted. It wasn’t just about entertainment. It was culture. It was storytelling through a distinctly Nigerian lens. And it travelled—from Oshodi to Ontario. It started from Jenifa to Omo Ghetto: The Saga, to A Tribe Called Judah, Funke Akindele has continuously broken records and redefined storytelling in Nigeria’s film industry. Her inclusion in the Hollywood Reporter list marks not only a personal milestone but a huge win for Nollywood and African cinema as a whole.
From funny girl to fearless filmmaker, Akindele’s evolution is proof that talent, grit, and a sprinkle of street-smart sass can open international doors. And this isn’t just a win for Funke — it’s a loud, proud win for Nollywood, for African women, and for the storytellers who dare to dream beyond borders.
Two Nigerian women. One global list. A million reasons to celebrate.
