Integrity Under Fire: Akandoh Vows Resignation as Health Minister Faces LHIMS Saga Storm

Ghana's Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has become a central figure in the escalating controversy surrounding the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS) contract. The system, designed to manage and coordinate digital health records across the nation's hospitals, is now the subject of intense scrutiny, with the Minister raising concerns about its value for money and the conduct of its vendor.
Mr. Akandoh notably urged former Health Minister Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye to exercise caution in his public statements regarding the LHIMS saga. Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, Akandoh emphasized that while political parties might encourage members to defend the government, personal integrity should always take precedence over political expediency. He warned that those who push for public defense might abandon their supporters if situations turn unfavorable, leading to a loss of integrity.
Dr. Okoe-Boye, who served under the previous administration, had recently defended the engagement of LHIMS, asserting that the contract followed due process and was aimed at modernizing health data management. However, Minister Akandoh countered that the contract did not deliver adequate value for money. He further disclosed that the government has referred the matter to the Attorney-General for legal and security advice, following allegations that the vendor withheld access to the health data platform after the contract’s expiration.
In a bold move to underscore his commitment to transparency and integrity, Mr. Akandoh issued a direct challenge to our LHIMS contractor. He publicly stated his willingness to resign immediately if any proof emerged that he had demanded money or a commission since assuming his role as Health Minister. “If he has any evidence to show that I, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, have demanded even one Ghana cedi from him, I will step down immediately. Let him bring it out, and I will resign,” he declared on Adom TV’s Badwam morning show.
The Minister dismissed the allegations of corruption as baseless and unfounded, acknowledging that public office often attracts such accusations. Despite this, he reaffirmed his steadfast commitment to integrity in public service, particularly in overseeing health sector projects. Akandoh continues to accuse the vendor of deliberately shutting down LHIMS services, a move he links to disagreements over a new service maintenance agreement, further fueling the ongoing tensions surrounding the crucial health data management system.
