INEC Sparks Fury: Opposition Rages Over ADC Leadership Derecognition & Alleged 2027 Plot

Nigeria's political landscape is currently dominated by a contentious leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a major opposition party, and the subsequent intervention by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This dispute, involving factions led by former Senate President David Mark and Nafiu Bala Gombe, has sparked widespread reactions from various political groups and legal experts, raising concerns about the integrity of democratic processes and the impartiality of electoral bodies.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently announced its decision to derecognize both the David Mark-led and Nafiu Bala Gombe-led factions of the ADC. This move involved removing the names of the Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC) from its official portal and declaring that it would no longer accept correspondence from, or monitor the activities of, either group. INEC's rationale, articulated by its National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna and Chairman Joash Amupitan through his Chief Press Secretary Adedayo Oketola, is rooted in compliance with a March 12, 2026, Court of Appeal judgment. This judgment, issued in Appeal No. CA/ABJ/145/2026, dismissed an interlocutory appeal by Mark and directed parties to "maintain the status quo ante bellum" pending the resolution of a substantive suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025) before a Federal High Court. INEC clarified that maintaining the status quo ante bellum means reverting to the situation as it existed before the suit was filed on September 2, 2025, which predated the recognition of Mark's NWC by INEC on September 9, 2025. The commission insists its actions uphold the rule of law and prevent situations where elected officials are removed for disobeying court judgments, like in Zamfara and Plateau states, while stressing its non-partisanship and regulatory role.
The Mark-led faction of the ADC vehemently rejected INEC's interpretation of the appellate court ruling, accusing the electoral body of acting under external pressure and of undermining opposition political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the Mark-led ADC, alleged that INEC's action was influenced by a government
