INEC Extends Voter Registration by Two Weeks: Nigerians Get Crucial Extra Time for 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a two-week extension for its ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. Originally slated to conclude on July 10, 2026, the new deadline is now Friday, July 24, 2026. This significant decision was disclosed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement issued on Friday.

This extension directly responds to feedback received from a wide range of stakeholders, including INEC's State Offices, various political parties, and civil society organizations. The Commission emphasized that this measure is intended to provide an additional and fair opportunity for all eligible citizens who are yet to register to be included in the Register of Voters ahead of future electoral activities. The CVR exercise commenced on August 18, 2025, and its prolongation underscores INEC’s unwavering commitment to ensuring broad accessibility and inclusivity in the electoral process.

In a further demonstration of its dedication to innovation, accessibility, and improved service delivery, INEC has also introduced a new self-service online registration option, specifically tailored for eligible first-time voters. This innovative service is scheduled to become available from Wednesday, July 8, 2026. Prospective registrants can access this option through the Commission’s dedicated CVR portal, cvr.inecnigeria.org, where a comprehensive step-by-step guide will also be provided to assist users.

The National Commissioner explained that this self-service option will empower eligible citizens to initiate and complete their entire voter registration process, including the crucial biometric capture, using their personal devices. This eliminates the need for a physical visit to an INEC office, streamlining the registration experience. To safeguard the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters, the system incorporates robust identity verification, advanced biometric validation, and thorough backend integrity checks.

INEC has strongly urged all eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to take full advantage of this extended window and explore the benefits of the new voter registration technology. The Commission reiterated its commitment to conducting a credible, inclusive, and accessible voter registration process, continuously advancing the use of technology to enhance citizens' overall experience and participation in the electoral system.
