Industry's Miriam Petche Unveils Must-See Season 4 Finale Moment!

The Season 4 finale of HBO's critically acclaimed series "Industry," titled “Both, And,” propelled its characters into new territories, leaving audiences eager for more as it was officially announced as the show's final season. A recent in-depth interview with Miriam Petche, who portrays the astute Sweetpea Golightly, offered profound insights into her character's intricate journey, the challenges of inhabiting the high-stakes world of finance, and her hopes for Sweetpea's future. The finale saw Harper Stern (Myha’la) beginning to establish her own standing in the finance world, alongside Sweetpea and Kwabena Bannerman (Toheeb Jimoh), after exposing the fraudulent activities of Tender and its co-founder, Whitney Halberstram (Max Minghella), which left Yasmin (Marisa Abela) and Henry’s (Kit Harington) future in jeopardy.
Petche openly admitted to not being fluent in the language of finance, a world she had few connections to before "Industry." For her, the entry point into the show's complex narrative was always the rich character dynamics and relationships. While acknowledging the financial backdrop and its impact on individuals, power, and ambition, she emphasizes that the human connections are what truly captivated her. The show has even sparked conversations with real-life finance professionals she knows, bridging a gap she didn't anticipate.
A significant highlight for Petche in Season 4 was exploring Sweetpea's life outside the demanding confines of Pierpoint. The episode where Sweetpea and Kwabena travel to Ghana offered a unique opportunity to see different facets of Sweetpea's personality, away from the office structure. This venture also deepened the audience's understanding of both Kwabena’s and Sweetpea’s family backgrounds, proving to be a "wonderful experience" for Petche, who praised Toheeb Jimoh as an "incredible scene partner." She also humorously recounted learning the "art" of eating in a scene, after over-committing to a yummy meal in an early take, only to realize the necessity of performing it "50 million more times."
A particularly harrowing moment in Season 4 was Sweetpea's attack in a women’s restroom. Petche described the scene as "crucial" to Sweetpea’s arc, marking a profound "loss of agency" for a character who closely associated control with safety. Extensive conversations about safety and choreography were held during production to ensure a secure environment for all involved. The terrifying incident, which involved a verbal escalation followed by a physical assault, was designed to feel invasive and blur lines, leading to a state of shock, numbness, and confusion for Sweetpea. This event ignited something within her, doubling down her resolve rather than prompting retreat, as she grappled with a completely thrown nervous system and a loosened "lid" she usually kept tightly on.
Following the traumatic experience, Sweetpea's actions reflected a desperate attempt to regain control and reconnect with her body. Her subsequent intimacy with Kwabena, and her bold decision to be the one to tell Harper about it, were not mere deflections but acts of agency born from a state of emotional shock and frayed nerves. Petche explained that Sweetpea's normal processing factors were compromised, leading to a desire for honesty and space. Sweetpea's honesty with Harper, even about their personal lives, underscores her desire to be seen as a serious worker and to establish a level of trust she's always wanted.
The complex dynamics between Sweetpea and Harper are a central theme. Petche noted a mix of "admiration and frustration" in Sweetpea's feelings towards Harper. Initially admiring Harper's uncompromising intelligence and drive, Sweetpea's idealized view gives way to the reality of working with her. While Sweetpea would approach things differently, Petche questioned if Sweetpea shares Harper's "appetite for risk," suggesting Sweetpea has a stronger "appetite for follow-through." Despite potential differences, Petche hopes they continue working together as a "formidable pair" rather than against each other.
The finale also brought a bittersweet form of recognition for Sweetpea, as she received two million quid. Petche described it as a "life-changing amount of money," but emphasized the "cost" associated with it. This moment prompted Sweetpea to reflect on "what she's put on the line" to reach this position, creating a mix of pride, confusion, shame, and lingering feelings from earlier in the season. Petche is intrigued by the possibilities for Sweetpea in Season 5, as she now stands in a position of greater financial and professional power, having proven her capabilities.
Recalling lighter moments, Petche shared the fun of improvising Harper's extravagant room service order (caviar, French toast, Pringles, Dom Pérignon) with creators Mickey Down and Konrad Kay. She also detailed the amusing and challenging experience of shooting the final scene where she rolls by in an office chair, calling it "a lot of hard work" but ultimately a "great moment" that felt very "Season 3 Sweetpea" in its whimsy. As for Season 5, Petche expressed a strong desire to see Sweetpea in a position of power, observing how she handles new opportunities and whether she adopts characteristics from past mentors or forges a new path. She expressed immense gratitude for the show's high level of writing, nuance, creativity, and the acting she has witnessed, stating it has raised the bar for her future endeavors. The prospect of the trio (Harper, Sweetpea, Kwabena) continuing to work together despite the show's tendency to tear characters apart remains an open question, but Petche suggests their foundation of honesty and respect might give them a better chance.
