India to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, Beating Nigeria’s Abuja Bid
)
India has been chosen to host the centenary edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030, marking a significant milestone as it will be the second time in two decades that the global sporting event takes place in the world's most populous nation. The city of Ahmedabad, situated in western India, secured the hosting rights over Abuja, Nigeria, following a thorough evaluation conducted by the governing body of Commonwealth Sport. This decision is anticipated to be formally ratified at the organization’s General Assembly, scheduled to be held in Glasgow on November 26.
Ahmedabad presents a compelling venue, boasting the Narendra Modi Stadium, recognized as the world’s largest sports arena with an impressive seating capacity of 132,000. This stadium, which recently hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final, is expected to serve as a primary attraction and likely the central hub for the 2030 Games. With a population exceeding five million residents, Ahmedabad is also being considered as a prospective bidder for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, further solidifying its burgeoning reputation as a global sports destination.
Dr. P. T. Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, articulated the nation's vision for the event, stating, “We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to a shared future across the Commonwealth.” India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010.
Meanwhile, Africa's aspiration to host the Commonwealth Games persists, as Abuja’s unsuccessful bid means the continent's long wait continues. Nigeria had previously been overlooked for the 2014 edition, which was ultimately awarded to Glasgow, Scotland. Despite the outcome, Commonwealth Sport acknowledged Nigeria’s dedicated efforts in a statement, indicating plans to formulate a strategy that could facilitate Nigeria’s hosting ambitions for future Games, potentially including a bid for the 2034 event.
