Bitcoin developers are invited to a unique "Antarctica: Cold Storage Edition" expedition in early 2028, combining a technical conference with an exploration of the Antarctic Peninsula. This exclusive event, limited to 22 spots, plays on the concept of bitcoin's cold storage, offering a distinct environment for in-depth discussions and collaborative work. Participants can also engage in various Antarctic activities and benefit from a 5% discount for full payment in Bitcoin.
Bitcoin developers, known for gathering in diverse locations worldwide such as Austin, Berlin, and Florianópolis, are set to embark on a truly unique expedition in early 2028. bitcoin++ has unveiled its “Antarctica: Cold Storage Edition,” an exclusive event scheduled from January 24 to February 5, 2028, offering a limited opportunity for only 22 participants. This distinctive gathering combines a technical conference with an Antarctic expedition, departing from Ushuaia, Argentina, crossing the formidable Drake Passage, and exploring the majestic Antarctic Peninsula before returning to its port of origin.
The event ingeniously plays on the concept of bitcoin’s “cold storage,” a fundamental practice of keeping cryptographic keys offline for enhanced security. Organizers envision the trip as an opportunity to transport high-level technical discussions to an exceptionally cold and isolated environment, fostering in-depth conversations that might typically occur in more informal settings. The 13-day, 12-night journey will see the expedition ship leave Ushuaia, navigate the Drake Passage, and sail along the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Potential stops include iconic locations like Neko Harbour, Paradise Bay, Port Lockroy, and the Lemaire Channel.
Beyond the technical conference, participants can engage in a variety of activities tailored to the Antarctic wilderness, such as kayaking, camping, hiking, snowshoeing, and Zodiac boat excursions. It is important to note that landing sites and activities are subject to weather conditions, ice presence, and expedition decisions. The conference itself will adopt an “unconference” format, allowing attendees to propose and lead talks, demonstrations, and discussions. To facilitate collaborative work and impromptu sessions, the ship will be equipped with Starlink connectivity and a dedicated private room for hackathons.
bitcoin++ has a rich history of organizing technical conferences, workshops, and hackathons specifically for bitcoin developers. The series commenced in Austin in 2022 and has since expanded its global footprint, hosting events in numerous cities including Berlin, Florianópolis, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Riga, Istanbul, Taipei, Las Vegas, Vienna, Nairobi, Toronto, and Seoul. Each edition often revolves around a specific theme, ranging from “learn me a bitcoin” in its inaugural Austin event to “lightning” in Berlin in 2025. With approximately 20 archived editions, the organization's next scheduled conference is “bitcoin++ Seoul, privacy edition,” set for November 5 and 6, 2026.
Reservations for the Antarctica expedition are currently open, with fares quoted in US dollars per person. Pricing ranges from $14,900 for a four-person cabin to $16,700 for a two-person cabin. Participants have the flexibility to pay in five equal installments or make a full payment at the time of signup. Notably, choosing to pay the full fare in bitcoin provides a 5% reduction in cost. The expedition cost includes essential parkas, while the final payment is due by October 1, 2027. Attendees are required to procure medical, evacuation, and repatriation insurance separately. Sponsorship opportunities are also available, allowing brands to place their logos on expedition parkas, with placements ranging from $5,000 to $25,000, each covering approximately 22 parkas. It is clarified that the expedition explores the Antarctic Peninsula, not the geographic South Pole.
