Horrific Otukpo Attack: Benue Leaders Vow Security Overhaul After Killings
The PDP governorship candidate for Benue State, Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa, and his running mate, Dr. Ogbenjuwa Oyije Ocheakiti, have condemned a deadly attack by armed herders on the Otukpo Nobi community, attributing it to the state government's failure in protection. They outlined a detailed plan of both kinetic and non-kinetic measures to enhance security in Benue South, emphasizing security as a core priority for their 2027 governorship agenda.
Chief Mike Kaase Aondoakaa (SAN), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for Benue State in the 2027 election, along with his running mate, Dr. Ogbenjuwa Oyije Ocheakiti, have vehemently condemned a recent attack. This incident, reportedly carried out by suspected armed herders on the Otukpo Nobi community in Otukpo District of Otukpo Local Government Area, tragically claimed the lives of more than eight individuals and led to the displacement of numerous residents.
In a joint statement released by their campaign organisation, the political duo extended their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Idoma people. They characterised the brutal assault as a profound tragedy that starkly highlights what they described as the state government's significant failure to adequately safeguard the lives and properties of its citizens. Aondoakaa, in his critique, lambasted "governance by lamentation," asserting that despite substantial security votes allocated to the state, many communities remain critically vulnerable to such devastating attacks. He further pinpointed the alleged failure to provide essential logistical and operational support to federal security agencies, specifically mentioning Operation Whirl Stroke, as a factor that has severely hampered counter-insurgency efforts in these troubled regions. Echoing this sentiment, his running mate, Dr. Ocheakiti, who is a recognized security expert, stressed the imperative for governments to transcend mere condolence messages and instead adopt robust, proactive strategies to prevent future attacks.
To address the escalating insecurity in Benue South, the PDP candidates put forth a comprehensive set of kinetic and non-kinetic measures. Among their recommended security strategies were the establishment of Forward Operational Bases (FOBs) at all identified entry points and transit routes, which are purportedly utilised by armed assailants. They also advocated for the institutionalisation and proper equipping of state-backed Civil Protection Guards and various community volunteer groups, thereby empowering local responses to security threats. Furthermore, they proposed the rigorous conduct of intelligence-driven operations aimed at systematically flushing out criminal hideouts nestled within the forests across the affected area.
Their non-kinetic recommendations were equally detailed, advocating for the transparent and accountable deployment of security votes to buttress advanced early warning systems. These systems would encompass state-of-the-art drone surveillance, dedicated community hotlines, and sophisticated geospatial tracking technology. Other crucial suggestions included fortifying border security through enhanced collaboration with neighbouring states, implementing a secure and humane resettlement programme for internally displaced persons (IDPs), and actively empowering traditional rulers, youth groups, and community development associations to significantly improve grassroots intelligence gathering and conflict resolution mechanisms.
The candidates underscored their firm belief that the fundamental responsibility of any government is the unwavering protection of its populace and their assets. They offered an assurance to the residents of Benue State that security would be a paramount and non-negotiable priority within their proposed governance agenda, should they emerge victorious in the upcoming 2027 governorship election.
