Hollywood Shocker: Netflix Splashes $587 Million on Ben Affleck’s Cutting-Edge AI Venture

Netflix has made a significant move into the artificial intelligence space with the acquisition of Ben Affleck's AI startup, InterPositive. The company disclosed in a federal filing (Form 10-Q report with the Securities and Exchange Commission) that it paid $587 million in cash for the acquisition, which was completed in March. This disclosure follows earlier reports that suggested the total purchase price could reach up to $600 million, with the additional amount contingent upon certain performance targets.

InterPositive, founded by Ben Affleck in 2022, had been operating in stealth mode prior to the acquisition. Its core mission revolves around developing AI tools that are designed to keep "filmmakers at the center of the process." The acquisition brought InterPositive's 16-person team, comprising engineers, researchers, and creatives, into Netflix. Ben Affleck himself joined Netflix as a senior adviser, continuing his involvement with the technology he helped create.

The startup's innovative tools leverage AI models built from production dailies to enhance various aspects of post-production work. This includes crucial tasks such as mixing, relighting shots, and adding visual effects. Notably, the technology focuses on augmenting these processes rather than forgoing typical visual generative efforts that might replace human creative input. As Affleck stated during the merger announcement, "From the invention of the moving image to the transition to digital, from motion capture to virtual production, technology has evolved alongside the artists who use it. Our shared commitment to continuing this legacy makes joining together a natural next step, in addition to Netflix’s decades of experience applying and scaling technology responsibly."

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos further elaborated on the company's broader AI integration strategy during a recent second-quarter earnings call. He highlighted the impact of InterPositive, even in its early days, alongside Netflix's other in-house tools. Sarandos revealed that approximately 300 of Netflix's titles have already utilized some form of generative AI this year. He cited the docuseries "The American Experiment" as a prime example, where AI was used to produce sequences "twice as fast and at half the cost of previous options."

Despite the enthusiastic embrace of AI for efficiency and enhancement, Sarandos emphasized that Netflix is not looking to replace human-made work with generative technology. He firmly stated, "We believe it takes great artists to make something great, and AI is not changing that. Movies are being made by people who make movies. AI provides them with better tools to make them even better." This philosophy underscores Netflix's strategic approach to AI as a powerful enabler for artists, rather than a substitute for their creative vision and effort.
