Guardiola's Reality Check: Man City's Domestic Treble Dream Distant, Manager Claims
Manchester City, under the management of Pep Guardiola, has etched its name in history by reaching a record fourth consecutive FA Cup final. This significant achievement followed a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Southampton at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. The decisive goals for City came from Jérémy Doku and Nico González, who managed to overturn a surprising early lead that Finn Azaz had secured for Southampton just eleven minutes before the final whistle.
Having already lifted the Carabao Cup in March, Manchester City now stands six games away from potentially completing a domestic treble, with five crucial Premier League matches remaining alongside the upcoming FA Cup final. However, Guardiola maintains a characteristically cautious stance regarding this ambitious prospect. When asked about the possibility of achieving the treble, he firmly stated, "Too much, far away. Before the final, before the Aston Villa game [on the final weekend] I would tell you it was a chance. Now it's far, far away." Emphasizing the need for recuperation, Guardiola has granted his players three days off, instructing them to focus on rest and temporarily detach from football before the intense final phase of the season.
Reflecting on his decade-long tenure at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola lauded his team's unwavering consistency. He offered a profound perspective on what truly defines a club's success, stating, "I think what defines, the people say now, how many Champions Leagues and how many this and that, but what defines the club is when you win five Carabao Cups and you play four finals in a row in the FA Cup. That defines." This statement highlights his belief that sustained domestic excellence, rather than singular international triumphs, is the ultimate measure. Manchester City is scheduled to play the FA Cup final on May 16, facing either Chelsea or Leeds United.
