Greater Manchester's Speed Camera Secrets Exposed!

Speed cameras have been a consistent feature on British roads for more than 30 years, initially appearing in 1992. While most motorists become acquainted with the locations of these cameras on their regular routes, few in Greater Manchester fully grasp the extensive reach and technological evolution of the region's enforcement system. Greater Manchester now hosts over 250 fixed traffic cameras, complemented by hundreds of additional 'mobile locations' where police can temporarily enforce speed limits.
The types of cameras employed for traffic enforcement have significantly expanded since the 1990s. Beyond the traditional spot-check cameras, the network includes average speed cameras, which are frequently utilized during motorway roadworks. Red traffic light cameras have also been implemented in Manchester. A notable recent development, rolled out only last year, involves new council-run ‘moving traffic offence’ cameras. These cameras specifically police rules governing yellow box junctions at six key intersections across the city, representing a major change in local enforcement.
Out of the total 262 fixed cameras identified across the city-region, the borough of Manchester itself accounts for the highest concentration, with 57 cameras. This comprehensive surveillance system polices Manchester’s network of motorways, busy A-roads, and orbital routes. To provide a thorough overview, a detailed list of every speed, average speed, red light, and yellow box camera has been compiled. This list integrates data from Greater Manchester’s 10 councils, includes earlier camera announcements from early 2024, incorporates more recent updates, and utilizes information from the 'Speeding Fine Calculator' database. Furthermore, all camera locations were rigorously cross-referenced with Google Streetview images to confirm their continued operational presence in 2025.
Being caught by a camera carries significant repercussions, starting with a minimum penalty of a £100 fine and three penalty points on the driving licence. However, punishments can be considerably harsher for more egregious offences. If a driver accumulates 12 penalty points on their licence within a three-year period, they face disqualification from driving. The threshold is even stricter for new drivers, who can be disqualified for attaining just six points in their first two years behind the wheel. Therefore, motorists are strongly advised to consult the comprehensive list before embarking on any new journey to ensure compliance and avoid these penalties.
