Ghana's Health System in Crisis: Medical Director Alarms Over Exodus of 300 Skilled Workers

The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is grappling with an alarming attrition rate, having lost close to 300 highly skilled and specialised health workers between January and June 2025. These professionals, not fresh graduates, have left in pursuit of better opportunities abroad, a trend that hospital officials warn severely threatens healthcare delivery in Ghana.
Dr. Harry Akoto, Deputy Medical Director of Korle Bu, disclosed these stark figures during a needs assessment visit by the administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares. Dr. Akoto highlighted that the primary reason for this exodus is remuneration, stating, “Our data show that about 300 people have left between January and June this year, and these are highly skilled, highly specialised professionals — not fresh graduates. The reasons are multifactorial, but the bigger chunk is remuneration. People feel they can earn more elsewhere.” He emphatically warned that without immediate action to improve working conditions, remuneration, and training for nurses and doctors, Ghana risks losing its most experienced healthcare professionals to more developed nations.
