Future Star Alert: Darius Acuff Jr. Joins NBA Draft Pool

Arkansas star guard Darius Acuff Jr. has officially declared for the 2026 NBA draft, making the announcement on ESPN's "NBA Today." Acuff is currently projected as the No. 6 prospect in the draft class, according to ESPN's Jeremy Woo, highlighting his significant potential at the professional level. Expressing profound gratitude, Acuff acknowledged the pivotal roles played by God, his family, coaches, and teammates in his journey, stating, "Without them, I wouldn't be here."
Acuff's freshman season with the Arkansas Razorbacks was nothing short of historic. He earned the prestigious SEC Player of the Year honors and secured a coveted spot on The Associated Press All-America first team. His exceptional performance led Arkansas to the Sweet 16, where he averaged an impressive 23.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, while also shooting an efficient 44% from beyond the arc. These statistics underscore his multifaceted game and his ability to impact the court offensively and defensively.
Standing at 6-foot-3, Acuff Jr. envisions himself as a standout performer in the NBA postseason. After observing the fast-paced and high-stakes environment of an NBA playoff game—specifically watching the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Houston Rockets—he confirmed his ambition: "I see myself there, for sure. That's one of my goals." He noted the intensified effort and determination displayed by teams vying for a championship, an experience that reinforced his professional aspirations.
Acuff is the latest in a lineage of elite point guards developed under coach John Calipari to declare for the NBA draft as a potential top-10 pick. Calipari's esteemed track record includes guiding Derrick Rose to become the No. 1 pick in the 2008 NBA draft after leading Memphis to the national title game, and John Wall achieving the same No. 1 pick status in 2010 after his season with Kentucky. Other lottery picks nurtured by Calipari include Brandin Knight, De'Aaron Fox, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Acuff openly stated that Calipari's consistent success in developing point guards was a key factor in his decision to sign with Arkansas.
Beyond his coaches, NBA legend Allen Iverson has served as a profound source of inspiration for Acuff's playing style and flair at the point guard position. Having formed a relationship in recent months, Acuff recounted his initial fascination with Iverson's highlights, telling his father, "This might be my new favorite player." Despite never having watched Iverson play live due to his age, YouTube footage was enough to captivate him. Acuff sees many similarities between himself and Iverson, even crediting Iverson as the reason he wears cornrows. He deeply values Iverson's advice to "just play every game like it's your last," an ethos he has embraced wholeheartedly.
