Football Fury: Osimhen Injury Row Ignites Galatasaray-Fenerbahçe Battle for TFF Green Light!

A contentious dispute ignited ahead of the highly anticipated Istanbul Intercontinental Derby as Fenerbahçe launched a formal complaint against Galatasaray's Nigeria international, Victor Osimhen, regarding his protective arm brace. Fenerbahçe's late attempt to prevent Osimhen from playing in the crucial Turkish Süper Lig match ultimately failed, with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) ruling that the Super Eagles striker was eligible to feature.
The controversy dominated the build-up to one of Turkey’s biggest football matches. Fenerbahçe submitted an official complaint to the TFF, arguing that Osimhen’s custom-made arm guard, worn since a forearm fracture suffered in a Champions League last-16 tie against Liverpool in March, was too rigid and could pose a risk to opposing players. Their medical team backed this claim with a detailed report, referencing International Football Association Board (IFAB) Law 4, which stipulates that protective equipment must not be dangerous to other players, and insisted on prioritizing player safety in such a high-intensity fixture.
Galatasaray vehemently rejected the complaint, according to Turkish outlet Milliyet, maintaining that the arm support is purely medical. They explained it is designed to stabilize Osimhen’s injury and manage pain, emphasizing that removing it would either expose him to further damage or render him unable to play. Club officials asserted that the brace is medically approved, safely designed with a rigid inner layer fully covered by soft material, meets standard safety requirements, and had already been cleared for competitive use. Galatasaray also believed the timing of the complaint, just days before a potential title-deciding match, was a deliberate attempt to unsettle them and limit the influence of their most dangerous player.
Even before the TFF delivered its verdict, Osimhen had made his determination clear, stating to his coach, Okan Buruk: “If I'm not allowed to play with my protection, I'll play without it. Just let me be on the field on Sunday. I owe this to the Galatasaray fans.” This declaration reportedly impressed Buruk, who later confirmed the striker would lead the attack.
After reviewing both sides and consulting equipment guidelines, the TFF dismissed Fenerbahçe’s request, clearing Osimhen to take his place in the starting line-up at Rams Park. This decision was crucial for Galatasaray, who boasted a four-point advantage over second-placed Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Süper Lig title race. A home win in this Week 31 clash could all but secure their fourth consecutive league title.
Osimhen's importance to Galatasaray is undeniable, with an impressive record of 19 goals and seven assists in 30 appearances this season, making him one of the most decisive players in the league. Turkish commentators widely weighed in on the controversy, with many dismissing Fenerbahçe's complaint. Levent Tüzemen suggested Fenerbahçe's objection stemmed from fear of Osimhen's presence, drawing parallels to his long-worn carbon-made face mask. While Gürcan Bilgiç offered a more balanced perspective, acknowledging rules on player safety but also the medical necessity and technological advancements in softer materials for protective gear.
This is not the first time Osimhen has played with protective gear. He is well-known for wearing a face mask since suffering multiple facial fractures in 2021 while playing in Italy. Galatasaray officials leveraged this history, pointing out that similar concerns were raised about his mask but it was eventually accepted under IFAB guidelines. They also highlighted that protective arm and wrist supports are not uncommon in football, citing former Fenerbahçe striker Edin Džeko as an example of a player who had used comparable equipment without attracting complaints. Galatasaray remained convinced the brace was a medical requirement, not a competitive advantage.
Osimhen’s journey back from his recent injury has been swift. After surgery, he made his return in the Turkish Cup, playing 17 minutes without discomfort, and then informed the coaching staff he was ready for the derby. With Mauro Icardi expected to start on the bench, Osimhen's presence alongside Barış Alper, Leroy Sané, and Sara added a crucial cutting edge to Galatasaray’s attack at a time when every point mattered in the high-stakes title race.
