EU Parliament Moves to Ban Germany's AfD Party, Sparking Political Firestorm

The European Parliament has initiated a verification procedure against the far-right Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) party, whose members include Alternative for Germany (AfD), over concerns regarding its compliance with fundamental EU values. This move could lead to ESN being stripped of its party status and losing EU funding, following a parliamentary vote that cited numerous instances of alleged non-adherence. The ESN party, formed in August 2024, criticizes the action as an attempt to stifle dissenting views.

EU Parliament Moves to Ban Germany's AfD Party, Sparking Political Firestorm

The European Parliament has initiated a rigorous verification procedure against the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) party, an alliance primarily composed of Alternative for Germany (AfD) and other prominent far-right political forces across the continent.

This significant action, approved on Tuesday, tasks the Authority forEuropean Political Parties and European Political Foundations (APPF) with a comprehensive investigation into ESN’s adherence to fundamental EU values.

The outcome of this process could be severe, potentially resulting in ESN being stripped of its status as a recognized European political party and, consequently, losing its crucial EU funding.

The decision to launch this investigation was passed with a substantial majority, garnering 414 votes in favour, 224 against, and 18 abstentions.

Although the vote was conducted by secret ballot, parliamentary sources indicated that the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and the far-right Patriots for Europe groups were the primary opponents, while all other major political factions within the Parliament supported the move.

The Socialist MEP, Alessandro Zan, emphasized the rationale behind the vote, stating, "No EU taxpayer money for those who trample on the fundamental values upon which the Union was founded."

MEPs from the European People’s Party (EPP) further elaborated on their concerns, citing numerous instances of behaviour and declarations by ESN members that they deem incompatible with EU values.

Those specific accusations include certain representatives of Alternative for Germany expressing Nazi sympathies.

Additionally, Thierry Baudet of the Dutch party Forum for Democracy has openly advocated for mass "remigration" as a means to preserve a "white" Europe, a stance widely condemned for its discriminatory implications.

A comprehensive dossier of evidence, previously compiled for an APPF report, underscores the alleged misalignment with EU values.

This evidence includes instances such as racist banners displayed by Czechia’s SPD party, an intervention by Bulgaria’s Revival party to prevent the broadcast of a film featuring scenes of homosexuality.

As the German court’s ruling that explicitly found AfD’s policy program to be "contrary to human dignity and freedom of religion."

In response to the vote, ESN issued a press note vehemently criticizing the outcome.

The party asserted that its members "must remain free to speak openly about the concerns of the people they represent, without the threat of administrative procedures or financial sanctions, simply because their views challenge the political consensus."

This statement highlights the ideological clash between the ESN’s perceived right to free expression and the Parliament’s insistence on upholding core EU values.

The Europe of Sovereign Nations party was established in August 2024, uniting eight far-right European parties. Key founding members include Alternative for Germany (AfD),

The Poland’s Confederation, and France's Reconquête, and the most recent addition to the alliance was the Italian National Future party, led by Former General Roberto Vannacci, who was previously affiliated with The League.

It is crucial to distinguish the ESN party, a legal entity funded by the EU budget and an alliance of national parties at the EU level, from the ESN political group within the European Parliament.

The latter is a parliamentary faction comprising the same political forces and currently has 27 MEPs.

Importantly, if the ESN party loses its status, neither the political group in the Parliament nor its individual lawmakers will face direct consequences.
