Ahmed Musa has officially announced his retirement from international football, concluding a distinguished 15-year career with Nigeria's Super Eagles. The 33-year-old made the announcement on Wednesday via his social media platforms, expressing profound gratitude and pride for his time representing Nigeria.

In his statement, Musa reflected on his journey, stating: "I wore this badge with pride for 15 years. From a 17-year-old boy answering every call to becoming the most capped Super Eagle with 111 appearances. AFCON champion. Nigeria’s highest World Cup goalscorer. Captain. Servant. Believer. I gave everything. Thank you Nigeria… my heart will always beat green." He further elaborated, "After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football, bringing to an end almost 15 years with the Super Eagles. From the very first call-up, wearing the green and white meant everything to me."

Musa debuted for the Super Eagles at age 17, playing his first match in a 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Madagascar on September 5, 2010. He recalled his early days in the national team setup, noting: "I was just a young boy when the journey started. I remember being invited at the same time to the U-20, U-23 and the Super Eagles. I was young, still learning, and always travelling, but I never complained. Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up."

Throughout his career, Musa achieved significant milestones. He was a key member of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in South Africa. Individually, he holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s most capped international, with 111 appearances, a feat he described as a source of immense pride and responsibility: "To become the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football is a great honour. Every time I wore the jersey, I understood the responsibility that came with it."

His World Cup performances were particularly notable. Musa remains the only Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match, netting a brace against Argentina in 2014. He further cemented his legacy by scoring another brace against Iceland in 2018, becoming the first Nigerian to score in two World Cups and the country’s leading all-time goal scorer in the competition with four goals. He cherishes these memories: "Winning the 2013 AFCON will always stand out. Scoring at the World Cup, against Argentina and Iceland, are memories I will always carry with me."

Musa also served as the national team captain for a period. He concluded his announcement by expressing gratitude to his teammates, coaches, support staff, football administrators, and Nigerian fans at home and abroad, stating: "As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude. I know I gave my best, and I believe the Super Eagles will continue to move forward."

At the club level, Musa returned to his boyhood club, Kano Pillars, for a third spell in October 2024. He currently serves as the General Manager for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, a role he assumed ahead of the 2025-26 season.
