Elon Musk Stirs Debate, Promotes Armie Hammer's Controversial Comeback Film 'Citizen Vigilante' on X!
Elon Musk controversially promoted the indie-action film "Citizen Vigilante" on his X account, drawing attention to the Armie Hammer-starrer which was directed by Uwe Boll. The film, banned in Germany for its violent and anti-migrant themes, received scathing reviews, with critics suggesting it could further damage Hammer's attempted comeback. Despite this, a sequel is already announced.
Elon Musk recently used his influential X account to promote the controversial indie-action film “Citizen Vigilante,” starring Armie Hammer. The link to the film was shared with Musk's 240 million followers on a Friday and remained active for approximately 48 hours before it was removed on Saturday, drawing significant attention to the little-known movie.
“Citizen Vigilante” was directed and written by the 60-year-old German filmmaker Uwe Boll. The film has been a subject of controversy, notably being banned in Boll’s native Germany. According to The Telegraph, the ban stemmed from the film’s depiction of “abhorrent violence” and its “anti-migrant” themes. Released in the U.S. on June 19, the movie centers on Armie Hammer’s character, an American abroad in Europe, embarking on a violent mission to eliminate criminal migrants. The cast also features Costas Mandylor, Désirée Giorgetti, Steffen Mennekes, Neb Chupin, and Mukit Abdul Hamid.
Armie Hammer, previously known for his roles in critically acclaimed films such as “The Social Network,” “Call Me By Your Name,” and “Sorry to Bother You,” saw his career significantly disrupted in 2021 following allegations of sexual assault. While Hammer consistently denied these allegations, and prosecutors ultimately declined to file charges against him in 2023, “Citizen Vigilante” appears to be an attempt at a career comeback for the actor.
The film’s critical reception has been overwhelmingly negative. Variety critic Todd Gilchrist delivered a particularly harsh assessment, stating that Boll, whom he described as “a cinematic embarrassment since the early 2000s,” has produced “a violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt slice of exploitation on the same qualitative level as ‘House of the Dead,’ ‘Alone in the Dark’ and ‘BloodRayne.’” Gilchrist further suggested that the film’s abysmal quality might even be a deliberate sabotage by the writer-director-producer, which could only harm Hammer's intended return to prominence.
Despite the initial film's controversial nature and poor reception, Uwe Boll announced on X that a sequel, “Citizen Vigilante 2,” is slated for release in 2027. This announcement followed an earlier post on X that Musk had responded to, which highlighted “Citizen Vigilante” as the No. 2 movie on the Apple TV charts. Musk's reply to that post enthusiastically declared, “’Citizen Vigilante 2’ will be even better,” indicating his continued interest in the franchise.
