Devastating Drought Triggers Mass Displacement Crisis in Somalia!

A severe humanitarian crisis is rapidly unfolding in Somalia, with nearly 62,000 people displaced by drought since the beginning of this year, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). The IOM reports that over six million people are currently facing hunger across five key districts within the country. Brian Kelly, senior programme coordinator with IOM Somalia, stated from Nairobi during a Geneva UN press conference that the total figure for drought-related displacement could exceed 300,000 nationwide, though data is currently available for only five districts.
Projections from the IOM indicate that an additional 125,000 people are expected to be displaced by drought between April and the end of June, despite anticipated rainfall. In the five most affected districts, drought is now responsible for three out of every four new displacements. Somalia, with an estimated population of around 19 million, is facing an alarming situation where nearly 6.5 million people, equating to almost one-third of the country's population, are experiencing high levels of hunger. Furthermore, over 1.8 million children are anticipated to suffer from acute malnutrition this year, underscoring the rapidly deteriorating conditions.
The devastating effects of the drought are driving widespread crop failure, significant livestock losses, and critical water shortages in the hardest-hit areas. This environmental catastrophe is forcing countless families to abandon their homes in a desperate search for assistance. Many of these displaced individuals are migrating to already overstretched urban centers and displacement sites, such as Mogadishu and Baidoa. These areas, however, are ill-equipped to support the influx of people, offering limited access to essential services like shelter, water, and basic necessities, as families often arrive after their water sources have dried up, crops have withered, and livestock has perished.
The forced displacement in Somalia disproportionately affects the most vulnerable populations. Health facilities in these affected regions are reporting a sharp increase in malnutrition cases, particularly among children. These facilities have also become critical gathering points, frequently serving as the only locations where communities can access water. For instance, Ido from Boroma district now walks five kilometers to the nearest clinic for water after deliveries in her village ceased, while Asha, living 15 kilometers away, has made the same arduous journey five times in the past month.
The humanitarian response is severely hampered by a significant funding shortfall. Collectively, UN agencies and NGO partners have received only 14 percent of the total funding requested for humanitarian assistance in 2026. Needs are escalating much faster than available resources. The IOM has recently concluded a “hyper-prioritisation” of immediate needs and is urgently appealing for US$10 million to provide life-saving aid and ensure a basic level of dignity for the most vulnerable individuals caught in this deepening crisis.
