I have heard from multiple sources that Western Michigan associate head coach Chris Fowler is the leader for the opening at D2 Saginaw Valley State. Fowler has been on the WMU staff for the past three seasons, and has also worked at Northern Arizona and Michigan State. He played collegiately at Central Michigan.
On campus interviews have wrapped up at D2 Ferris State. I can confirm that two current NAIA head coaches from the Midwest were brought to campus. Could be a sneaky 3rd candidate lurking though. I have heard that this one has been offered to one of the candidates. More here shortly.
Thomas Gray has stepped away from his position as the head basketball coach at NJCAA D1 Eastern Florida State College and will focus on other opportunities outside of basketball. The position was actually posted late last month, and it sounds like the finalists have already been selected. Last season was Gray’s first at EFSC after a stint as the Director of Recruiting at Vanderbilt. He has also worked at Ole Miss, McNeese State, and served as the head coach at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
Delano Thomas has resigned as the head basketball coach at NAIA Florida Memorial. Prior to taking over at FMU back in 2023, Thomas captured the 2020-21 NAIA National Championship at as the head coach at Shawnee State. This past season, he led Florida Memorial to a 23-8 (12-4 SSC) record.
Justin Newton has stepped down as the head coach at NAIA Reinhart University, where he went 90-86 over the past seven seasons. Word on the street is that he will take over as the head coach at NJCAA D1 Motlow State. More on this move as I hear it.
I have heard that interviews will take place next week at D3 Guilford College, with four coaches scheduled to visit campus. It sounds like all four are current D3 head coaches, with one being from Guilford’s league (ODAC).
D3 Western Connecticut has an open assistant spot as Brendan MacKinnon has departed the Wolves staff in order to work out several NBA and FIBA pros. I have heard that WestConn may add Chris Watts as an assistant coach. Watts had spent the past three seasons as the head coach at D2 Mercy University before stepping away earlier this spring.
Allen Harris has taken over as the head basketball coach at NEPSAC Pomfret (CT). Harris has made stops as a college assistant at D2 Virginia State and NJCAA D1 Richard Bland, and worked in the G-League for the Maine Red Claws.
