Huawei Kenya, in partnership with Equity Group Foundation, has launched a Huawei ICT Academy at the Open University of Kenya (OUK). This initiative aims to equip over 10,000 Kenyans with essential digital skills to succeed in the technology-driven economy.

Located within Konza Technopolis, the academy supports the government's Digital Superhighway initiative, a part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). The academy addresses the growing demand for tech talent in Kenya, ensuring that young people, especially those in underserved areas, gain access to the necessary technical training.

The academy will provide self-paced online courses in fields like Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, and Software Development. Students will receive dual certifications from OUK and Huawei. Additionally, a Virtual Innovation Hub will be established to foster the creation of real-world solutions in sectors such as agriculture, education, health, and fintech.

During the launch ceremony, Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao presented the Academy plaque to OUK Vice Chancellor Prof. Elijah Omwenga. Dr. James Mwangi, Chancellor of OUK and Executive Chairman of the Equity Group Foundation, also attended.

Mr. Gao emphasized the partnership's commitment to nurturing Kenya's digital talent and aligning with the national vision for innovation and digital inclusion. Dr. Mwangi highlighted the importance of providing inclusive access to digital skills, ensuring that young people can participate in the digital economy. Prof. Omwenga noted that locating the Academy at OUK within Konza Technopolis reflects the university's role as a digital-first institution and its commitment to accessible, future-ready education.

The Huawei ICT Academy is expected to stimulate innovation, job creation, and inclusive growth, positioning Kenya as a leader in digital transformation. Equity Group will also invest in the development of a Virtual Innovation Hub to support this initiative.
