Crucial DCU Binge: 10/10 Series You Must Watch Before Summer's 'Supergirl'!

James Gunn's approach to the DC Universe (DCU) appears to draw significant lessons from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), particularly in avoiding content oversaturation. Unlike the MCU's 2022 release schedule, which featured three films and three Disney+ series, the DCU has maintained a more measured pace. Its television series, such as "Peacemaker," "Creature Commandos," and the forthcoming "Lanterns," are designed as supplementary narratives rather than mandatory viewing for understanding the film side of the universe. However, an exception to this supplementary rule, and arguably a must-watch, is the four-part animated series "Krypto Saves the Day!" These shorts feature Krypto, the breakout character from the 2025 "Superman" film.

"Krypto Saves the Day!" provides the Kryptonian canine with an animated treatment reminiscent of Looney Tunes. Unlike earlier animated iterations, such as the "Krypto the Superdog" series (2005–2006) where Sam Vincent voiced the character, or 2022's "DC League of Super-Pets" where Dwayne Johnson lent his voice, this Krypto does not speak. He mirrors his cinematic counterpart: a mischievous, curious, troublesome, yet undeniably sweet dog, complete with distinctive tics like a single ear sticking up. The chaos he unleashes in these five-plus minute shorts, while amplified for comedic effect, remains entirely plausible within his character.

The series features several notable misadventures. In "School Bus Shuffle," Krypto's relentless pursuit of a taunting pigeon leads to a cascade of comedic events, including slicing the iconic globe atop the Daily Planet building in half and leaving a school bus full of children precariously balanced on a drawbridge. In "Halloween Havoc," his chase after a black cat inadvertently causes numerous children to lose their trick-or-treat candy. "Package Pandemonium" sees Krypto pursuing a mail carrier with a T-bone steak, resulting in the destruction of a snowman, the felling of the large Metropolis Christmas tree, and the shattering of the community ice skating rink. The fourth short, "Coastal Catastrophe," promises further nautical escapades.

Despite the initial chaos, Krypto's big heart always prevails. In "School Bus Shuffle," he intervenes to prevent the bus from falling, safely delivering it to the school. For "Halloween Havoc," he spots a truck laden with candy, takes the trailer, and disperses its contents, showering the delighted children with sweets (much to Clark Kent's financial chagrin). In "Package Pandemonium," Krypto melts and refreezes the shattered ice rink, re-erects the Christmas tree, and constructs an even grander snowman, transforming frowns into smiles before setting his sights on Santa's sleigh.

Although "Krypto Saves the Day!" is not required viewing and, as James Gunn himself confirmed, is non-canon, it serves an essential purpose, particularly for the upcoming "Supergirl" film. The seamless portrayal of Krypto between the film and cartoon allows audiences to further connect with the character's chaotic innocence. This consistent presence keeps Krypto in the public eye, building anticipation for "Supergirl" among younger fans and adults alike who appreciate his antics. This connection is crucial because of a significant plot point in the film: Krypto is poisoned by Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, driving Kara (Milly Alcock) on a desperate quest for an antidote. Without a developed emotional attachment to Krypto, Kara's frantic urgency would lack the necessary emotional weight. By continuing to endear Krypto to fans through projects like these shorts, viewers become personally invested in his well-being, thereby deepening their engagement with the "Supergirl" narrative. "Krypto Saves the Day!" may not be canon, but it represents a brilliant strategic move designed to significantly enhance audience investment in the DCU's future.
