Chet Holmgren Injury Rocks Thunder Season, OKC Makes Swift Moves
Oklahoma City Thunder faces a significant challenge with key players Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, and Cason Wallace sidelined due to injuries. Holmgren's patellar tendon tear, along with Williams' fractured fibula and Wallace's torn labrum, has led the team to reconsider signing free agent Ochai Agbaji as they reevaluate their roster spot.
The Oklahoma City Thunder is facing significant roster challenges as power forward/center Chet Holmgren will miss eight to ten weeks due to a patellar tendon tear in his right knee. This injury, announced by the team on Friday night, makes Holmgren the third Thunder starter sidelined for an extended period this week, joining forward Jalen Williams and guard Cason Wallace, both of whom sustained injuries in a game against the LA Clippers on Sunday.
According to the Thunder, Holmgren met with specialists after experiencing mild discomfort in his right knee. A "biological treatment" was performed Friday to address a "small" tear in his patellar tendon. Holmgren has a notable history of injuries since being selected second overall in the 2022 draft, having missed the entire 2022-23 season due to a broken foot and a few months of the 2024-25 season with a fractured pelvis. Despite these setbacks, he played a crucial role in the Thunder's championship run last season, earning first-team All-Defensive and third-team All-NBA honors with averages of 17.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.
Jalen Williams underwent surgery on Wednesday for a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle, while Cason Wallace had surgery on Friday for a torn labrum. Both Williams and Wallace will be reevaluated before the end of the regular season, as previously stated by the Thunder. These combined injuries have prompted the Thunder to reassess their roster strategy.
Consequently, the Thunder decided not to sign free agent forward Ochai Agbaji, sources close to the situation revealed. Agbaji, the No. 14 pick in the 2022 draft, was initially set to join the team following the injuries to Williams and Wallace. However, the team is now taking a step back to reevaluate its open roster spot in light of Holmgren's injury. Sources confirmed that Agbaji's health was not a factor in this decision. Agbaji, who was waived by the New York Knicks earlier this month, has averaged 7.2 points and 2.7 rebounds over 263 games in his career, including 108 starts.
