Chaos Erupts: Trump Evacuated During White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting Incident

The annual White House correspondents’ dinner at the Washington Hilton ballroom on Saturday night was violently disrupted by gunshots, leading to the immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Hundreds of guests, including senior government officials and journalists, were forced to hide under tables as US Secret Service agents, with weapons drawn, rushed White House pool reporters out of the room amidst shouts of “shots fired.”

CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was reportedly within a few feet of the assailant, described seeing a “very, very serious weapon” and witnessing the shooting. He recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “As he was shooting, of course, the first thing that went through my mind: is he trying to shoot me? And I don’t think he was trying to shoot me, but I was very close to him as the gunshots were fired and he was very very scary.” Democratic congressman Jamie Raskin, also in attendance, recalled being thrown to the ground by a Secret Service agent along with others, while people screamed and yelled, with swift recognition that gunshots had occurred. House Speaker Mike Johnson and his wife were also at the dinner, expressing gratitude that no innocent people were harmed and everyone was safe.

The incident began when a suspect, later identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, charged a US Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton. According to Jeff Carroll, the interim chief of police of the Metropolitan Police Department, the suspect was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, appearing to be a “lone” gunman. Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser confirmed the sole gunman and stated there was no reason to believe anyone else was involved. Allen was taken to a local hospital for evaluation but was not shot himself. Investigators believe he did fire a shot and was potentially a guest at the hotel. A motive for the attack has not yet been publicly disclosed by officials.

During the chaos, a law enforcement official reported that an officer was shot, but a bullet-resistant vest prevented serious injury, and the officer is expected to recover. President Trump later confirmed this detail, praising the quick and effective actions of the Secret Service and law enforcement. Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for the District of Columbia, announced that the defendant has been charged with two counts of felony firearms and assault charges, with an arraignment scheduled for Monday and expectations of further charges.

Following the disruption, President Trump posted on Truth Social, assuring the public that the First Lady, Vice President, and all Cabinet members were in "perfect condition." He announced the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days. In a press briefing from the White House, Trump commended the unified response to the unexpected violence, noting that the incident, which occurred “quite far away,” highlighted the dedication to freedom of speech the event represents. He also voiced concerns about the security of the Washington Hilton, describing it as “not a particularly secure building,” and advocated for a more secure ballroom at the White House for future events.

The atmosphere at the dinner was already tense, given President Trump’s decision to attend this year after refusing in prior years and during his first term. The White House correspondents’ dinner, a tradition since 1921 with presidential attendance since 1924, holds significant historical weight. Notably, the Washington Hilton is the same hotel where President Ronald Reagan was shot and gravely wounded by a would-be assassin in 1981. When questioned about threats to his life, Trump, who also survived an assassination attempt during his 2024 presidential campaign, remarked, “It’s a dangerous profession.” Weijia Jang, president of the White House correspondents’ dinner, thanked attendees for coming together and confirmed the event’s rescheduling.
