Britney Spears' Shocking DUI Arrest: Details Emerge from Chaotic Scene

More detailed information has surfaced regarding pop star Britney Spears' arrest in March on suspicion of driving under the influence. Police records, obtained and reported by The New York Times, reveal insights into the incident, including the arresting officer's observation that Spears' mood shifted from "confrontational and agitated to flamboyant and compliant." The officer also noted that Spears "appeared to speak with a British accent at times" during the encounter.

When Spears, 44, was pulled over for erratic driving on March 4 around 9 p.m., authorities reportedly discovered a bottle of unprescribed Adderall and an empty wine glass in her vehicle. Confronted by police, Spears denied being intoxicated, claiming she had consumed only one mimosa earlier that afternoon. In a video released to the Times, an officer asked Spears to rate her sobriety on a scale of 0-10, to which she reportedly responded, "I could drink probably four bottles of wine and take care of you, I’m an angel."

The California Highway Patrol later released incident and investigative reports, along with audio files and dashcam video footage, providing a comprehensive account of the arrest. The six video clips, totaling over three hours, captured officers pursuing Spears' black BMW convertible, her being taken into custody, and the events until early morning on March 5. Upon pulling her over, an officer detected an odor of alcohol from the car and informed Spears she was stopped for "swerving in two lanes." Spears reportedly apologized, stating she was on her phone, and at one point told officers, "You can come to my house — I’ll make you food or lasagna or whatever you want. I have a pool."

Initially, Spears, wearing a sun hat, refused to exit her vehicle, claiming she had been "pranked" before. She eventually complied ten minutes later, at which point the officer noted her slurred speech and unsteady gait. "I know my rights," Spears asserted, maintaining she was fit to drive and stating, "I haven’t done anything." Officers evaluating Spears at the scene and later at the highway patrol office observed her using several different accents, sometimes speaking in a "childlike" voice. During an impairment test, an officer reported her speaking "nonsensically about things that did not pertain to the exercise," leading to the conclusion that she was under the influence of both alcohol and a stimulant.

According to the documents, Spears informed officers that she takes Prozac for depression, Lamictal for epilepsy and "mood swings," and Adderall, a prescription stimulant for ADHD, to stay "elevated." In her 2023 memoir, "The Woman in Me," Spears had previously denied a long-running substance abuse issue, though she mentioned Adderall as her "drug of choice" in 2008 when dealing with depression before her 13-year conservatorship.

Breathalyzer tests administered to Spears showed blood alcohol concentrations of .05 percent and .06 percent, both below California's legal limit of .08%. However, when asked to go to a hospital for a blood test, Spears reportedly became "argumentative and belligerent" and was subsequently transported in handcuffs to provide blood samples. The results of these tests were not disclosed in the initial arrest report. While in the back of a police cruiser, footage shows Spears telling officers they were being "mean to me" and "lying," insisting, "I didn’t have a D.U.I.! I wasn’t even drinking."

Spears was booked into jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and released the following morning. Earlier this month, she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving involving drugs and alcohol, resulting in an order to serve 12 months’ probation. In April, a spokesperson for Spears confirmed she had voluntarily checked herself into a treatment facility. To date, Britney Spears has not issued any official public statements regarding her arrest or plea deal.
