BMW Teases Electrifying Future for Its Coveted Alpina Lineup!

BMW has unveiled significant details about the future direction of its newly acquired Alpina subbrand, hinting at a luxurious and distinct lineup that will position itself strategically within the automotive giant's portfolio. Following its acquisition in 2022 and finalization early this year, BMW is pivoting Alpina from simply enhancing existing models to developing entirely new, distinct vehicles. This strategic shift aims to fill a unique luxury segment not currently covered by BMW's core product offerings, with the first new model expected to arrive next year.

A major revelation points to a spiritual successor for the discontinued BMW 8 Series, which is anticipated to emerge from this new BMW Alpina subbrand. This forthcoming model will draw heavily from the design language of the striking Vision BMW Alpina concept, first showcased in May. Philip Koehn, Senior Vice President and Head of Product Line for BMW Luxury Class Vehicles, BMW Alpina, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, confirmed that the Vision concept, a large four-passenger coupe with V-8 power, provides a strong indication of what the first new BMW Alpina model will look like. It is expected to utilize the robust 7 Series platform, a logical progression given the previous Alpina B7 sedan's 7 Series origins.

The new BMW Alpina models will proudly feature signature Alpina cues, such as their distinctive striping, which will now be integrated as painted lines under the clear-coat for a refined finish. While the 8 Series previously offered two-door and four-door Gran Coupe versions, the specific body style for the first new BMW Alpina model remains to be seen. Feedback on the Alpina Vision concept and the broader BMW Alpina initiative has been overwhelmingly positive, both from the public and from dealers who have also been previewed an Alpina variant of the upcoming new-generation BMW X7, serving as a successor to the current XB7 SUV.

The current Alpina XB7 is manufactured at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, a facility renowned for producing a range of BMW SUVs including the X3, X5, X6, X7, and XM, along with their electric counterparts. However, Koehn did not specify whether future XB7 models would continue to be built in the U.S. This new era for BMW Alpina is set to offer models that provide a distinctive look, an upscale feel, impressive speed, and a comfortable driving experience, effectively slotting above the core BMW brand but below Rolls-Royce. These luxury vehicles are projected to fall within the $160,000 to $340,000 price range, positioning BMW Alpina as a direct competitor to brands like Mercedes-Maybach, as BMW aims to oversee what Koehn describes as the "candy shop of BMW."
