Blockbuster Battle: Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and Top Gun 3 Race for Release

Renowned producer Jerry Bruckheimer, a name synonymous with blockbuster hits like 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Top Gun', has once again garnered significant attention, securing his second Oscar nomination this year for the Brad Pitt-led sports drama 'F1'. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously helmed Bruckheimer's Oscar-nominated 'Top Gun: Maverick', 'F1' has surprised many with its critical and commercial success, earning nominations for Best Picture, Visual Effects, Film Editing, and Sound.
During a recent Oscar luncheon, Bruckheimer discussed the impact of 'F1' alongside updates on his other highly anticipated projects: 'Pirates of the Caribbean 6' and 'Top Gun 3'. He confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that both sequels are actively under development, stating, "I think it's a horse race between the two of them, so we'll see." When pressed further, he revealed, "Right now, Top Gun is a hair ahead, but that's it. We're expecting a script shortly."
The announcement of 'Top Gun 3' follows the immense success of 'Top Gun: Maverick', which, released four summers ago, not only revitalized the franchise but also played a crucial role in Hollywood's post-pandemic recovery. Fans' eagerness to witness Maverick and his new squadron on the big screen has set a high bar for the upcoming installment. Director Joseph Kosinski previously shared insights into the sequel's progress with Collider, confirming that Ehren Kruger is currently writing the script. Kosinski teased the ambitious scope of the film, stating, "The scale of it is massive. It's going to make Maverick feel small in comparison, honestly. That's all I want to say. It's very exciting. But we're working on the script." 'Top Gun: Maverick', released on May 27, 2022, as an action-drama-war film, ran for 130 minutes, with a writing team including Ashley Miller, Justin Marks, Peter Craig, and Zack Stentz, and starred Tom Cruise and Miles Teller.
On the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' front, the franchise, which began entertaining fans in 2003, transformed a Disney park ride into a global phenomenon, revitalizing the pirate genre and leaving a significant cultural impact. Despite the long wait for another installment and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Johnny Depp's return as Captain Jack Sparrow, a sixth film is indeed in development. While no official confirmation exists regarding Depp's involvement, Bruckheimer previously suggested his return is contingent on a compelling script: "If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it. It’s all about what’s on the page, as we all know… We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but we’re close."
The future of 'Pirates of the Caribbean 6' has been a subject of much speculation, including the potential involvement of 'Barbie' star Margot Robbie. Several years ago, Robbie was reportedly attached to lead a new film in the 'Pirates' universe, and recent reports even suggested a future installment could focus on Jack Sparrow's son. Addressing these theories at the Oscar luncheon, Bruckheimer hinted that fans were "close on part of it." When pressed specifically about Robbie's involvement, he affirmed, "I think you’re going up the right road," adding that the team "loves Margot Robbie" and had conversations with her. In 2020, Disney was reportedly developing two separate 'Pirates' projects: a reboot starring Robbie and a continuation of the original series co-written by veteran Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin. While Robbie had previously claimed her film was shelved, Bruckheimer's recent comments imply her involvement may still be a possibility for the franchise's future. The original 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl', released on July 9, 2003, as an action-adventure-fantasy film, ran for 143 minutes, directed by Gore Verbinski, with a story by Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Stuart Beattie, and Jay Wolpert, and starring Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush.
Fans eager for more updates can stream 'Top Gun: Maverick' on Paramount and all 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies on Disney+. The ongoing development of both highly anticipated sequels underscores their significance in Jerry Bruckheimer's illustrious career and the broader landscape of Hollywood blockbusters.
