Billionaire Buzz: Jeff Bezos Linked to Liverpool Consortium as Fan Group Demands Answers
Liverpool FC is reportedly close to selling a significant minority stake to a consortium led by Amit Bhatia, which includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. This potential investment has prompted the Spirit of Shankly supporters' group to seek urgent clarity from the club regarding ownership control and the new investors' roles. The club's current owner, FSG, has confirmed interest in a strategic minority investment to benefit the club.Liverpool Football Club is reportedly on the verge of securing a significant minority investment, with a consortium led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, understood to be nearing a deal. This development has prompted a robust response from the club's supporters' group, Spirit of Shankly (SoS), which has underscored the critical importance of ownership and control to the club's integrity and its fanbase.
Among the high-profile individuals linked to this consortium is Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, recognized as one of the world's three wealthiest individuals. Despite his immense personal wealth, estimated at £210 billion ($283bn), and ownership of The Washington Post and Blue Origin, Bezos possesses no prior experience in sports team investment. While he was previously associated with potential takeovers of NFL teams like the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks, this potential investment marks his first foray into the sports ownership landscape. Other notable figures within the group include Eduardo Saverin, a co-founder of Facebook.
Amit Bhatia, however, brings relevant experience, having recently stepped down as co-owner and director of Queens Park Rangers after an 18-year tenure, making him the only major player in the consortium with a history of operating a sports business. The proposed deal, reportedly for a 30% stake, is significant and has led SoS to demand greater clarity and a meeting with the club's hierarchy. The supporters' group emphasized that "who owns it and how they control it – putting the interests of LFC and its supporters first – is fundamental to us all," referencing the events that preceded Fenway Sports Group's (FSG) acquisition of the club.
SoS has voiced concerns that similar sales at other clubs have resulted in detrimental changes to their running and football operations, decisions they wish to avoid at Liverpool. The group specifically requested details regarding the new investors' potential roles, including board seats and their level of involvement in the club's operations both on and off the pitch.
Liverpool's current owner, FSG, has consistently expressed openness to external investment, particularly if it benefits the club. This stance was reiterated by FSG principal owner John Henry, and confirmed by Liverpool chief executive Billy Hogan, who stated that a consortium "led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has come forward to make a minority investment in the club." The club's value has soared dramatically under FSG's ownership, from £300 million in 2010 to approximately £4.5 billion today. In 2023, Dynasty Equity previously acquired about a 3% share for around £120 million.
As of now, neither FSG nor a spokesperson for Bhatia's consortium has provided public comments beyond an initial statement last month, which confirmed an interest from an investment consortium led by Amit Bhatia in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool. The situation continues to unfold as supporters seek further transparency regarding the future control and direction of their beloved club.
