Ayoba Messaging App Explodes: 1 Million Users in Just Four Months!

Ayoba, MTN’s instant messaging platform, has rapidly achieved a significant milestone, reaching 1 million active users within mere months of its launch. This landmark achievement was formally announced by the MTN Group, highlighting the platform's growing presence in the digital communication space across Africa and the Middle East.

Designed as an advanced communication application, Ayoba is meticulously localized to cater to consumers in African and Middle Eastern markets. Rob Shuter, MTN Group President and CEO, emphasized the company’s vision behind Ayoba, stating that their customers deserve a platform that allows them to express their unique voice, honors their rich identity through local languages, and addresses specific needs with offerings like a data-included service for MTN users, impending Mobile Money transfers, and locally relevant content available through various channels.

To facilitate inclusive communication, Ayoba supports a wide array of local languages including Pidgin, Yoruba, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Swahili, Hausa, French, and English, catering to the diverse linguistic landscape across MTN's operational markets. Launched in August, Ayoba primarily enables users to send and receive messages efficiently.

Currently, Ayoba is operational in Nigeria and seven other MTN markets: Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Congo Brazzaville, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Afghanistan, and South Africa. There are also concrete plans to expand its reach to Guinea Conakry, Liberia, Benin, and Rwanda before the year concludes.

The platform boasts several key features designed to enhance user experience. 'Chat Now' allows users to instantly send and receive texts to their contacts, irrespective of their device or network. 'Chat Everyone' further extends communication capabilities, enabling messages to be sent even to contacts who do not have the app installed. Beyond these, Ayoba prioritizes user privacy with end-to-end encryption for all communications. It also offers a variety of 'channels' where users can subscribe to relevant content across numerous categories.

Looking ahead, David Gilarranz, CEO MTN Digital, revealed that Ayoba is actively working on integrating new features to further enrich its offerings. A significant development in the pipeline is the creation of an open digital platform, which will foster third-party innovation. This initiative aims to provide a diverse and rich experience, deliver more value to users, empower local developers, and create localized experiences optimized for specific communities. Rob Shuter also reiterated that Mobile Money transfers will soon be made available on the platform, integrating financial services into the messaging experience.

Ayoba's rapid growth aligns with MTN's overarching goal of bringing more people into the digital world by offering affordable and simplified digital communication services. Achieving 1 million active users within just four months post-launch underscores MTN’s successful leveraging of its extensive customer base, positioning Ayoba as a potential significant competitor to established chat platforms like WhatsApp in the region.
