AMVCA 2026 Red Carpet Unveiled: Genoveva Umeh & Osas Ighodaro's Daring Looks!

The red carpet at the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), held recently at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, was once again a spectacular display of Nigerian fashion, highlighted by two distinct sartorial narratives from Osas Ighodaro and Genoveva Umeh. Both actresses made bold statements through their custom creations, showcasing innovative design and a deep appreciation for cultural heritage.

For years, the partnership between designer Veekee James and muse Osas Ighodaro has been a highlight of the AMVCA red carpet. Each season, they consistently raise the bar, and the 12th AMVCA was no exception, featuring two completely distinct and impactful looks that commanded attention.

Osas Ighodaro’s first ensemble, aptly named “The Pulse,” was a striking floor-length sculptural gown. Veekee James meticulously constructed this piece from horizontal red bands of fabric layered over a sheer nude base, each band edged with red crystal trim to add texture and depth. While the column silhouette was narrow and precise through the body, the true showstopper was the dramatic, oversized structured collar. Rising well above the shoulders, it framed the neck and face, transforming the garment into a piece of wearable architecture. In campaign imagery, this collar could even be folded forward over the face, turning the gown into a freestanding art object. Felix Crown captured this look against a deep red digital backdrop featuring concentric circles and a heartbeat waveform, perfectly echoing the gown’s powerful presence.

The second look from Osas Ighodaro was a silver ballgown that showcased one of the most fascinating construction details seen in Nigerian couture in recent memory. The heavily embellished bodice was a silver corset, both fitted and sheer in sections, adorned with intricate crystal and bead detailing, and featuring sculpted three-dimensional forms at the bust. A high choker-style chain necklace completed the neckline, creating a dramatic contrast with the voluminous skirt below. This enormous, billowing ball gown was crafted from pale silver-grey tulle, and its surface was covered inch-by-inch with unique circular disc-shaped appliqués. These appliqués were remarkably made from 400 repurposed, shaped metal sponges, sewn onto the couture gown to create an unexpected and genuinely original design choice. The result was a skirt that appeared ready for a gallery exhibit, complete with a generous train. Sheer gloves, a ring, earrings, and a neat updo with soft, face-framing pieces completed this avant-garde vision. Felix Crown photographed this look in various settings, including a clean studio and a dramatically lit textured wall.

Veekee James has undeniably solidified her reputation as a designer who understands Osas Ighodaro’s capacity for carrying bold fashion, and Osas consistently proves to be the ideal collaborator for a designer willing to take significant creative risks. Their showing at the 12th AMVCA was hailed as their best yet, sparking anticipation for their future collaborations.

Meanwhile, Genoveva Umeh graced the red carpet at the 12th AMVCA with a custom Sòró Asò dress that was described as a “full conversation about heritage, fabric, and futurism.” Styled by EniStyledMe, Genoveva, who was nominated for Best Lead Actress and Best Digital Content Creator, presented a look rich in cultural significance and modern flair. The most striking element was the sharply structured corset, featuring vertical multicoloured beadwork and woven detailing. Its armour-like quality was enhanced by silver crystal cups set against the woven fabric’s texture. This piece was made from Akwaete fabric, an indigenous textile from the East of Igboland, chosen to blend cultural roots with a futuristic vision.

The corset was paired with a massive red tulle skirt that pushed outward from the waist in huge, soft layers, giving the overall impression of a doll-like elegance as Genoveva moved. Additional details included shoulder embellishments covered in pearls and crystals, which added shape to the upper half of the dress and balanced the skirt's volume. A crystal eye-shaped clutch completed the ensemble, adding another layer of intrigue and coherence to the outfit.

Both Osas Ighodaro and Genoveva Umeh's appearances at the 12th AMVCA underscored the event's role as a premier platform for showcasing exceptional Nigerian design, blending artistry, innovation, and cultural storytelling in unforgettable red carpet moments.
