Stars Align: Unveiling the Hottest AMVCA 2026 Best Lead Actor Nominees

The 12th Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA), scheduled for May 9, 2026, in Lagos with Joke Silva as head judge, is set to host an unprecedented level of competition in its Best Lead Actor category. This year's nominations, particularly the eight contenders for Best Lead Actor, highlight the profound depth of talent thriving across African film and television. What stands out is not merely the individual quality of performances, but the diverse range they collectively represent, from veterans exploring new emotional territory to rising stars signaling a continental ambition for the AMVCA.
Several actors have achieved notable recognition in this cycle. Lateef Adedimeji earned a historic triple nomination, including Best Lead Actor for 'Lisabi: A Legend Is Born' and two Best Supporting Actor nods for 'Gingerrr' and 'Red Circle'. Uzor Arukwe also secured a rare double nomination, appearing in both Best Lead Actor for 'Colours of Fire' and Best Supporting Actor for 'Behind The Scenes'. Femi Branch, similarly, garnered a double nod, with a Best Lead Actor nomination for 'Red Circle' and a Best Supporting Actor nomination for 'Owambe Thieves'.
The nominees for Best Lead Actor showcase a remarkable array of portrayals. Mike Ezuruonye received his first AMVCA Best Lead Actor nomination for his role as Chidi in 'Oversabi Aunty'. In this comedy, Ezuruonye subtly conveys frustration through pauses and expressions, providing a quiet counterweight to the lead character's chaos. Toyin Abraham, his co-star, praised his fulfilling delivery that exceeded her expectations for the character.
Lateef Adedimeji, a highly nominated individual this year, reprises his titular role as the Egba hero in 'Lisabi: A Legend Is Born'. This film is part of a franchise into which he has poured personal passion, serving as executive producer alongside his wife, Mo Bimpe. His versatility is clearly demonstrated through his multiple nominations across lead and supporting categories.
Khumbuza Meyiwa, the sole non-Nigerian in this category, marks his first AMVCA nomination for 'Bet I Love You'. His inclusion underscores the pan-African scope the awards are fostering. Meyiwa stars as Rex, a compulsive gambler whose addiction leads to chaos, exploring themes of family, desperation, and redemption in this film directed by Nigerian filmmaker Joseph Duke and produced by Urban Brew Studios.
William Benson's performance as Efemini in 'To Kill A Monkey' earned him his first AMVCA Best Lead Actor nomination. He anchors the film's weighty themes of survival, betrayal, and moral compromise with deliberate restraint, making Efemini's internal struggles resonate authentically. The film, a Netflix hit in 2025, became one of the most talked-about Nigerian productions.
Kanayo O. Kanayo delivers a delightful departure from his usual intense roles in 'Grandpa Must Obey'. Playing a 70-year-old widower grappling with grief, his character finds an unexpected turn when forced to babysit his two lively grandchildren. This role allows the veteran actor to explore warmth, humor, and emotional depth in a heartwarming story of healing and rediscovering joy in family bonds.
Uzor Arukwe's role as a conflicted warrior in 'Colours of Fire' demands his full range of capabilities, blending physical presence with emotional vulnerability. He portrays a man caught between clan loyalty and forbidden love, showcasing the specific tension required for such a character. His double nomination this year signifies a significant step in his career.
Wale Ojo returns to the Best Lead Actor category for '3 Cold Dishes', a film that also garnered six other AMVCA nominations. In this story about three women seeking justice after being trafficked, Ojo plays a central role in their journey of reckoning. Having won this same award in 2024 for 'Breath of Life', his consistent presence demonstrates his enduring talent.
Femi Branch delivers a powerful performance in 'Red Circle', a crime thriller rooted in personal struggle and moral conflict. This builds on his previous Best Lead Actor nomination at the 2025 AMVCA for his portrayal of Bashorun Ga’a in 'House of Ga’a', further solidifying his diverse acting capabilities with a simultaneous supporting actor nomination for 'Owambe Thieves'.
