Anthropic Rebuilds White House Ties Despite Pentagon ‘Supply-Chain Risk’ Label

Anthropic is actively re-engaging with the Trump administration despite being flagged as a “supply-chain risk” by the Pentagon, a designation that could limit federal use of its AI models.

The company is challenging the label in court while maintaining dialogue with senior officials, revealing a split within government over how to approach advanced AI providers.

The classification, typically applied to foreign threats, shows the seriousness of the dispute but has not halted broader engagement.

Senior figures, including Scott Bessent and Jerome Powell, have reportedly encouraged financial institutions to explore Anthropic’s technology, signaling continued confidence beyond defense circles.

Meetings between CEO Dario Amodei and top White House officials, including Susie Wiles, were described as “productive and constructive,” focusing on collaboration in cybersecurity, AI safety, and maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.

The rift with the Pentagon stems from failed negotiations over military use of Anthropic’s models, particularly the company’s refusal to support applications such as autonomous weapons or mass surveillance.

While the Defense Department maintains its hardline stance, reports suggest most other agencies remain open to adopting Anthropic’s technology, highlighting a broader policy divide.

As Anthropic continues legal and diplomatic efforts, its position reflects a growing tension between AI innovation, national security priorities, and ethical constraints in government partnerships.
