African EV Revolution: Spiro Secures Staggering $215M to Power Battery-Swap Expansion!

Spiro, a leading African electric mobility company, has successfully closed a significant $215 million equity funding round. This latest capital injection, backed by Impact Fund Denmark and Equitane, marks one of the largest single raises for an electric vehicle infrastructure company on the African continent, underscoring the growing investor confidence in sustainable transport solutions in the region.
This substantial funding brings Spiro’s total capital raised across three rounds to over $365 million, following a $50 million round earlier this year and a $100 million round last October. Each funding milestone has been swiftly followed by measurable expansion, and this latest raise, being its largest to date, is set to propel the company into its next phase of aggressive growth and technological advancement.
The newly secured funds are earmarked for several strategic initiatives crucial to Spiro's mission. The company plans to significantly expand its robust battery-swapping network, which is a cornerstone of its operational model. Furthermore, it will strengthen its manufacturing and assembly footprint across its operating regions, accelerate its technology development, and facilitate its entry into new, high-potential markets. The Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia have been identified as the next target markets, joining its current operations spanning seven African nations: Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, and Cameroon.
Spiro's operational scale and impact are already substantial. Currently, the company boasts over 100,000 electric motorcycles actively on the road and operates more than 2,500 battery-swapping stations. This extensive network has facilitated over 30 million battery swaps to date, showcasing the efficiency and widespread adoption of its services. Its industrial presence includes manufacturing facilities in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda, complemented by a dedicated battery recycling facility in Nigeria, demonstrating a commitment to a circular economy approach.
The economic benefits delivered by Spiro's electric mobility solutions are particularly impactful for its users. Motorcycle taxi operators and delivery workers, who depend on their bikes for their livelihoods, can experience a reduction of up to 40% in daily transportation costs. This translates to an impressive saving of as much as $2 per day compared to using gasoline-powered motorcycles. For individuals often earning between $5 to $10 daily, these savings represent a transformative improvement in their financial well-being.
Gagan Gupta, Spiro’s founder and chairman of Equitane, emphasized the company’s evolution, stating, “Our deployment of 100,000 electric vehicles and 2,500 smart-swap stations has turned sustainable mobility into an affordable, everyday reality. We are entering our next growth chapter to deliver clean, cost-effective energy and transport alternatives to millions of riders across the continent.” Lars Bo Bertram, CEO of Impact Fund Denmark, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the dual appeal of the investment: “We see potential for significant commercial growth in Spiro and electric mobility across Africa, as well as measurable climate impact. That is exactly the type of investment we want to make.”
Beyond the commercial success, Spiro's environmental contributions are significant. A third-party lifecycle assessment of its Kenyan operations revealed that its electric bikes achieve a remarkable 72% reduction in climate impact compared to their fossil-fuel counterparts, preventing approximately 19 tonnes of CO₂ emissions over each vehicle’s lifespan. The study also noted an 80% reduction in ozone depletion potential and a 20% reduction in particulate matter, offering substantial public health benefits in African cities often grappling with air quality issues.
Looking ahead, Spiro is ambitiously expanding its vision beyond mere mobility, aiming to become a distributed clean-energy utility. Its innovative swap stations are IoT-enabled and powered by solar energy, showcasing a commitment to renewable solutions. The company is also actively developing secondary-life battery applications, repurposing used batteries for stationary renewable energy storage. With a dedicated team of 150 engineers and a portfolio of over 30 proprietary patents, Spiro is not merely deploying imported technology. It is actively building its own, specifically designed for African conditions, with the long-term ambition of exporting its cutting-edge solutions globally.
