2028 Mitsubishi Outlander Diamond Trail Edition: New Fun on the Horizon

The 2028 Mitsubishi Outlander is set to elevate its off-road capabilities and rugged appeal with the introduction of the new Diamond Trail Edition. This special edition is Mitsubishi's response to the growing trend of off-road-focused vehicles, aiming to provide even more go-everywhere-ness to compete with rivals' Wilderness, TrailSport, and Woodland specials.

Visually, the Diamond Trail Edition distinguishes itself with a suite of black exterior enhancements. A prominent matte-black grille dominates the front fascia, complemented by darkened fender cladding that adds to its robust appearance. The SUV rides on 18-inch black aluminum alloy wheels fitted with Nexen all-terrain tires, designed to provide enhanced grip on challenging terrains. Practicality is also boosted with the inclusion of roof rails, offering additional cargo storage options for adventurers. A new exterior color, Trail Green Metallic, is exclusively available for this edition, further emphasizing its outdoor readiness.

Significant improvements have been made to the vehicle's geometry, crucial for off-road performance. Redesigned front and rear bumpers contribute to better approach and departure angles, which are now 20.5 degrees and 23.1 degrees, respectively. This is a notable improvement over the standard angles of 18.3 and 22.2 degrees, allowing the Outlander Diamond Trail Edition to tackle steeper obstacles with greater ease.

The interior also receives an exclusive treatment designed for durability and style. The seats are upholstered in a unique water-repellent dark gray material, specific to the Diamond Trail Edition, featuring contrasting khaki stitching. Further interior accents include dark satin, chrome, and matte-black trim elements, finishing the rugged yet refined aesthetic.

Technological advancements in the Diamond Trail Edition primarily focus on enhancing off-road driving dynamics. A new "Rock Mode" drive setting has been introduced, engineered to mitigate downhill slippage through precise brake control and automatically engaging hill descent control, providing drivers with increased confidence on uneven surfaces. The instrument cluster features a new screen that provides crucial off-road information, including traction control intervention, the slip of each individual wheel, and the front-wheel steering angle. Additionally, the multiview camera system, which typically deactivates at 6.2 mph in non-Diamond Trail grades, remains active until 18.6 mph in this edition. This extended functionality allows drivers to continuously monitor the trail at slightly higher speeds without needing to reactivate the camera system.

Under the hood, the 2028 Outlander Diamond Trail Edition retains the same powertrain found in other models. It is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbo mild hybrid four-cylinder engine, which debuted for the 2026 model year. This engine delivers a claimed 174 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque, providing a balanced performance for both on-road and light off-road adventures. While there are no engine upgrades specific to this edition, the comprehensive package of exterior, interior, and off-road technology enhancements clearly positions the Diamond Trail Edition as a more adventurous and capable option within the Outlander lineup.
