Zimbabwe Mourns Sungura Legend: Macheso Leads Emotional Tributes to Nicholas Zakaria

Legendary Sungura musician Nicholas Zakaria, affectionately known as Madzibaba, has passed away at the age of 66. His family confirmed the news, stating, "It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas Zakaria, the talented musician and beloved member of our community. Nicholas left an indelible mark on the music world with his inspiring voice and dedication to his craft. His legacy will live on through his music, and he will be deeply missed by fans and loved ones." Details regarding his memorial service are expected soon, as the nation mourns this true icon.
The news of Madzibaba's passing triggered an outpouring of grief, led by Sungura star Alick Macheso, who described the loss as a "deep and painful wound" for Zimbabwe’s music community. Macheso, who rose to prominence under Zakaria's mentorship as a member of the famed Khiama Boys, emphasized that the departure of his musical father marks the end of an era for Sungura and the broader arts sector.
In a heartfelt social media tribute, Macheso hailed Zakaria as the "foundation of his career" and a "towering figure" whose influence shaped generations of musicians. He wrote, "Beloved relatives across the four corners of the world today is a day in which we are pierced to the core, a wound that does not heal… We are mourning the loss of our father, Madzibaba Zakaria, who was our cradle and our bridge in music. The whole world bows its head, tears streaming down our cheeks as we grieve the loss of our hero."
Zakaria is widely recognized as one of the principal architects of modern Sungura music, mentoring countless young talents. Macheso remains his most prominent protégé, consistently acknowledging Zakaria as a father figure and guiding light. Macheso concluded his tribute, stating, "To relatives, friends and all who stood with us, I do not have many words at this moment; much will be said as time goes on. As I stand with all families, I say: Rest in peace, Father."
The Chitungwiza Municipality joined Macheso in mourning Zakaria, describing his death as a "dark cloud" over the town. They highlighted his contributions as a Cultural Ambassador since 2010, and his active participation in community initiatives, including the Mayor's Christmas Cheer Fund and visits to care homes. The municipality affirmed, "His contribution to our community and his enduring legacy will forever be remembered. The passing of the Senior Lecturer is a profound loss to the nation and to Chitungwiza at large. May his soul rest in peace and may his family find comfort and strength in the Lord."
