Peter Obi's 2027 Presidential Bid Ignites Fierce Debate & Political Maneuvering
Minister David Umahi dismisses Peter Obi's 2027 presidential ambition as no threat to the APC, emphasizing South-East political integration and performance records. Meanwhile, Obi, the NDC candidate, asserts increased preparedness for 2027, advocating for national unity and a fair electoral process, even as the Anambra State Government urges voters to reject him, citing alleged party betrayal and financial controversies.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, has publicly declared that Peter Obi’s 2027 presidential ambition, as the candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), poses no threat to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or President Bola Tinubu. Speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” and “Sunday Politics,” Umahi, who described Obi as his “brother” and “friend,” dismissed any concerns about Obi’s political influence, especially in the South-East region.
Umahi reiterated his consistent stance on integrating the South-East into mainstream national politics. He recalled his past advocacy for the region to allocate 25 percent of its votes to former President Muhammadu Buhari, while he personally supported Atiku Abubakar in his home state of Ebonyi. This position, he explained, was rooted in the necessity for the South-East to engage more actively in national political discourse.
The Minister challenged the perception that Obi was the sole presidential aspirant from the South-East, noting that several other candidates from the region were also contesting the 2027 election. He asserted that political claims should be substantiated by performance records, urging aspirants to make their development achievements available for public scrutiny. Umahi cited projects from his tenure as Ebonyi State governor, such as the state university teaching hospital and airport, as examples of his administration's accomplishments.
Regarding a rumored “Rainbow Coalition” involving opposition politicians, Umahi firmly denied any involvement, affirming his unwavering membership in the APC. He also acknowledged his friendship with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, but maintained that Ebonyi State exclusively supported the APC, stating there was “nothing like that.”
Conversely, Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate for 2027, has stated that he and his team are significantly more prepared for the upcoming polls than they were for the 2023 elections. Speaking on “Global Digital Town” and a virtual town hall meeting, Obi emphasized the NDC’s commitment to collaborating with other opposition parties to ensure free, fair, credible, and transparent elections in 2027.
Obi articulated his and the NDC's vision to build a country where every Nigerian can thrive, urging citizens, particularly the youth, to actively participate in the electoral process. He underscored the critical need for national unity, arguing that a divided nation cannot achieve meaningful development. Obi pointed out that despite being divided along ethnic and religious lines, Nigerians face common economic and security challenges, with no group enjoying preferential treatment in terms of prices or safety.
The former Anambra State governor called for Nigerians to elect a leader capable of uniting the country across all divides and relentlessly addressing insecurity. He stressed the importance of active citizen engagement throughout the electoral process, including mobilizing voters, deploying polling agents, and remaining at polling units until votes are counted and results declared, to safeguard the integrity of the elections. Obi also cautioned against succumbing to financial inducements or intimidation, linking such actions to a diversion of funds from essential public services. Furthermore, he advocated for robust support for security agencies, including adequate logistics, equipment, and care for their families.
In a contrasting development, the Anambra State Government, through its official X account managed by Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s New Media office, has urged voters to reject Peter Obi in the 2027 general election. The state government accused Obi, a former governor of Anambra under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), of betrayal and attempting to destroy the party that facilitated his rise. It alleged that while President Bola Tinubu supported APGA in 2015, Obi backed the opposition.
This development unfolds amidst political realignments, with Governor Soludo having declared support for President Tinubu for the 2027 election, citing a 22-year friendship and the Federal Government's economic reforms. APGA itself endorsed Tinubu as its preferred candidate for 2027, with its National Executive Committee concluding that supporting his re-election was in the country's best interest.
Further adding to the political friction, Obi and Soludo have recently clashed over financial obligations related to projects from Obi’s gubernatorial tenure. Obi refuted claims of “debt owed by Peter Obi,” clarifying that the figures cited by the state government, amounting to US$123.77 million, primarily pertained to World Bank and International Fund for Agricultural Development programs. He explained that these were negotiated by the Federal Government and accessed by participating states through subsidiary arrangements, not personal borrowings. Obi criticized the state government for incorrectly combining distinct categories (approved, drawn, and outstanding amounts) and misapplying public-sector accounting principles.
