Super Eagles Rocked by Injuries and Absences Ahead of Crucial Russia Friendly
The Super Eagles of Nigeria face Russia in an international friendly with a severely depleted squad, hit by injuries and club restrictions. Coach Éric Chelle will use this opportunity to assess new talent and rebuild confidence after a recent AFCON qualifier defeat, while Russia's goalkeeper Matvey Safonov will also be absent.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to face Russia's Sbornaya in an international friendly on Tuesday at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium. This match comes as a crucial fixture in Nigeria's international break, following their recent 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers where they secured a victory against Madagascar but suffered an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Guinea-Bissau.
However, the Nigerian squad heading into this encounter is significantly depleted and largely untested. Coach Éric Chelle is working with a reshaped team due to a series of late withdrawals stemming from injuries, club refusals, and residence permit issues. Key players like Captain Wilfred Ndidi and defender Akpe Victory have been ruled out due to injuries sustained in the previous AFCON qualifier against Guinea-Bissau. Ndidi's absence is particularly impactful, as he was expected to lead the team as captain and serve as the midfield anchor.
Further complicating matters, several players were prevented from joining the squad by their respective clubs. Midfielder Raphael Onyedika was stopped from traveling by Eintracht Frankfurt, while Bright Osayi-Samuel was withheld by Birmingham City. UAE-based midfielder Ridwan Abdulrasaq Popoola was blocked by Al-Wasl, and Moses Usor, despite a late call-up, was not released by LASK. Additionally, Slavia Prague's Suleiman Mubarak, who was poised for his Super Eagles debut, could not make the trip due to unresolved residence permit issues. These withdrawals mean that many established stars like Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and Samuel Chukwueze are also not present, leaving Chelle with only 18 players reported to the Novgorod camp as of Sunday evening, with ten of them uncapped. A late invitee, Ibraheem Ajasa of Russian club FC Rostov, was expected to potentially increase the available players to 19.
Conversely, Russia enters the tie as clear favorites, benefiting from home advantage at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium and fresh off a dominant 6-0 victory over Namibia. Despite their strong position, Russia will be without one of their standout players, goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. Safonov left the Russian camp early to return to Paris Saint-Germain for rest and preparation for a demanding club schedule, with no injury reported. In his absence, Aleksandr Maksimenko, Anton Mitryushkin, or Stanislav Agkatsev are expected to take his place between the posts.
Despite the significant challenges, this friendly represents a valuable opportunity for Coach Chelle to assess fresh talent and experiment with his squad. It's a chance to build confidence after the Guinea-Bissau defeat and evaluate players for both the senior team and the Olympic squad ahead of the U-23 AFCON qualifiers. The Super Eagles last met Russia in June 2025, playing out a 1-1 draw at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.
Several players in the current, reshaped Super Eagles squad are particularly worth watching:
Emmanuel Fernandez: The Rangers centre-back brings a formidable physical presence (1.98m) to the defense. With several preferred defenders absent, Fernandez could assume greater responsibility, and a commanding display could solidify his position in Chelle's future plans.
Akor Adams: As one of Nigeria's stars at AFCON 2025, Adams is expected to be the Super Eagles' most obvious attacking threat in the absence of Osimhen and Lookman. His physical presence, ability to hold up the ball, attack crosses, and occupy centre-backs will be crucial against Russia's defense. Adams will also be looking to respond positively after Nigeria's performance in Bissau.
Moses Simon: The Paris FC winger stands as an experienced attacking figure in a squad largely composed of players looking to establish themselves. Simon's pace, directness, and ability to operate from either flank provide Chelle with tactical flexibility. With several usual attacking stars missing, the 31-year-old could carry much of the creative burden, drawing on his experience in the Super Eagles shirt.
Kelechi Iheanacho: The former Manchester City and Leicester City forward brings considerable experience (58 senior Nigeria appearances, 15 international goals) to a squad that lacks experienced attackers. His ability to drop between the lines, link midfield with attack, and create chances could be particularly useful. Having scored in every game for Bursaspor this season, Iheanacho has an opportunity to score his first Super Eagles goal since November 2023 and remind Nigerian football of his enduring capabilities.
The available squad for this encounter includes goalkeepers Michael Atata, Samuel James, and Stanley Nwabali; defenders Kenneth Igboke, Isaac James, Benjamin Fredricks, Emmanuel Fernandez, and Abdullahi Bewene; midfielders Chibuzo Nwoke, Stephen Michael, Igor Wilfred, and Aderemi Adeoye; and forwards Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Akor Adams, Peter Edokpolor, Abubakar Umar, and Abdullahi Umar.
