Zanzibar Hails Saudi Arabia's Pivotal Hajj Fund Contribution
In a significant diplomatic exchange underlining the robust and growing relationship between the two nations, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, extended profound gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its unwavering commitment to maintaining and strengthening their brotherly and strategic cooperation. This crucial meeting took place on January 19, 2026, at the historic State House in Zanzibar, solidifying ties built upon the fundamental principles of mutual respect, solidarity, and shared interests.
President Mwinyi hosted a high-level delegation from Saudi Arabia, led by the esteemed Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah. The Saudi Minister was accompanied by Ambassador Yahya bin Ahmed Okeish, the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Tanzania, emphasizing the importance both countries place on this bilateral dialogue. During their discussions, President Mwinyi highlighted the enduring nature of their partnership, which extends across various sectors and continues to foster progress and development in Zanzibar.
During the productive talks, President Mwinyi put forth several key requests to the Saudi Arabian government, aimed at enhancing critical areas for Zanzibar. He specifically urged for continued support to the Zanzibar Hajj Fund, a vital initiative designed to fortify the preparations and overall environment for pilgrims embarking on the sacred journey of Hajj.
Furthermore, he advocated for the development of cooperation in Islamic education, seeking an increase in educational opportunities for Zanzibar students in Saudi Arabia, thereby fostering intellectual growth and cultural exchange. A strategic economic proposal was also presented, with President Mwinyi advising Saudi Arabia to explore the potential for increasing direct flights between Saudi Arabia and Zanzibar, particularly during the peak Hajj period, to facilitate travel and boost connectivity.
Responding positively to President Mwinyi's earnest appeals, the Honorable Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah lauded Zanzibar for its commendable efforts in implementing significant infrastructure reforms. He specifically cited improvements in airports and roads as pivotal steps that have effectively stimulated an increase in tourist arrivals and consequently propelled economic growth within the island nation.
Minister Al-Rabiah concluded his remarks by reaffirming Saudi Arabia's steadfast commitment, assuring Zanzibar of the Kingdom's continued dedication to strengthening cooperation across a multitude of fields, promising a future of mutual benefit and sustained partnership.
