Zambian MP Jay Jay Banda's Mysterious Capture Ignites Human Rights Battle

Gilbert Liswaniso, the long-serving youth chairman for the United Party for National Development (UPND), has publicly called for the arrest of prominent lawyer Linda Kasonde and other human rights advocates. This demand comes as these advocates press for maximum transparency, strict adherence to the rule of law, and respect for human rights in the state's prosecution of former lawmaker Jay Jay Banda.

Jay Jay Banda's live anti-regime Facebook broadcasts gained significant popularity among ordinary and impoverished Zambians. In response to the state's handling of his case, human rights defenders have demanded explanations from the State regarding the legal basis and international protocol under which Banda was reportedly seized from Mozambique. They have also questioned why he was admitted to a hospital rather than being held in detention facilities.

Liswaniso reacted vehemently to these demands by human rights organizations. He accused them of actively funding Jay Jay Banda’s activities, which he alleged were intended to destabilize Zambia. Specifically targeting groups like 'Chapter Zambia', Liswaniso stated, “The same chapter thing bamene abo, maybe they’re the same people who were giving money to Jay Jay… They should be arrested because these are people encouraging anarchy.”

Further elaborating on his position, Liswaniso added, “I want to tell the same Chapter Zambia to be arrested; you cannot tell about how Jay Jay Banda has been arrested… Let them go and ask the Police but that kind of question means these are the sponsors who wants to see this country should be in fire; disturb the development; disturb the peace of this country and disturb the unity of this country.” His statements suggest a belief that the human rights advocates' inquiries betray their alleged involvement in sponsoring anti-regime practices and fostering civil unrest.
