Zambia's Political Chessboard: Hichilema & M'membe Announce 2026 Running Mates

President Hakainde Hichilema of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has confirmed the reappointment of Mutale Nalumango as the party's Vice President. This decision was communicated in a letter dated April 21, signed by President Hichilema, and was made following the party’s recent General Assembly. The reappointment was carried out under the provisions of Article 56(4) of the UPND constitution, solidifying Nalumango's continued role within the party leadership.
In his communication, President Hichilema expressed his confidence in Nalumango's ability to serve both the UPND and the nation with continued diligence. He extended his congratulations, acknowledging her well-deserved appointment. Political analysts have interpreted this reappointment as a clear signal of continuity within the UPND's leadership structure, particularly as the party gears up for the upcoming general elections, indicating a stable and consistent approach moving forward.
In a distinct political development, the opposition People’s Pact, led by Fred M’membe, has also announced its presidential running mate for the upcoming August 13 general election. Dolika Banda, niece of former president Rupiah Banda, has been selected for this crucial role. M’membe stated that her selection followed a thorough and extensive vetting process, underscoring the importance of this decision for the nation's future.
Emphasizing the weight of the leadership roles, M’membe articulated his belief that Zambia’s future trajectory is intrinsically linked to the caliber of leadership constructed and the national purpose established. He stressed that the absence of leaders whom citizens can admire and trust would hinder progress, reiterating that the nation's future, much like its past, is dependent on the robust leadership that is cultivated.
